Anyone using Serato DJ yet?

Post by Capture pt » Tue Feb 04, 2014 1:44 pm

Anyone using the new software yet? Think full support is out now.

Bit reluctant to upgrade, a massive fan of "if it works don't fix it" when it comes to critical software/hardware.

(which consequently saved me a ton of headache by waiting for everyone else to upgrade to Mavericks first to discover nothing works.)

It depended on what hardware you had,

So I used Scratch Live, as I have a SL2 box.

But if you had a controller or something I was something different (cant remembe what)

The Serato DJ's whole "thing" is to unite all the hardwares to one software.

I'm not using it, but I'm thinking of getting a Traktor Kontrol S4. Now I've also looked into Serato and it looks promising. Hmmmm, let's see...

I'm now using Serato DJ 1.6.3 with my Rane SL3 box.

It's a vast improvement with 2 key features for me:
1. Now the SL3 outputs and Inputs are available to other apps whilst Serato DJ is open (unlike Scratch). - For me this means I can ShoutCast properly without using the audio in on my laptop.

2. Software effects applicable to THRU channels/decks! You can now play analog vinyl and effect it as you would a digital source with the DJ-FX unit. I haven't delved into the expansion packs as the standard effects far surpass the quality of most in built dj mixer effects.

It is not without it's downside though, the primary being the underdeveloped MIDI control. This is actually behind what Scratch has to offer currently. You can no longer MIDI assign ABS/REL/THRU, you can with INT though. The other three are now in a shit drop down menu for some dumb reason.
Also, the MIDI control panel, to load, scroll through and select tunes is no longer available, which is of no consequence to me, but I know it will bug many.

Also there's a pretty low level bug meaning if you have SL3 (like me) and use any other buffer setting apart from 2ms, it moves your deck inputs around. Bizarre and irritating bug, as I'd prefer the safety of a 5ms buffer.

Overall, I would get involved, you don't have to remove Scratch and it will open all your crates as is. The platform overall has some key features that Scratch was lacking.

So last night I spent the 29 bucks on the Pitch n Time expansion (replacement for the fucking awful pitch lock in SDJ). Although I'm still not 100% happy with it being basically paid for (and on the disc) DLC, it does sound absolutely superb and makes pitch locking entire sets and big tempo changes actually feasible. Would highly recommend.

For guys with MIDI controllers the previous program was Serato Itch

I don't even use Serato but at least from what other people have said Serato DJ doesn't work with a bunch of Soundcards/MIDI controllers that they said it would work with so everybody says to just stick with Scratch Live/Itch.
