"electronica"
Was originally indie rockers trying to make a nu form of new wave + late 80s ambient.
Stuff like radioheads' zzzz record, royksopp, sct germain or robert hood. And closer to studio recordings than single setup/bedroom studios with little understanding of what a computer could do. Kraftwerk where way more progressive 20 years before.
The albums would consist of recording sessions and produced in layers like pet shop boys, peter gabriel or even prince did, in a way.
It was all bad imo.

Whereas Idm was aphex when he was doing technoey bits, boc, telephone tel a viv, muziq, plaid and similar artists that still took inspiration from techno, hardcore and jungle etc

Those two words have somehow become interchangeable.
Probably because they sound equally shit.
I think 'brain dance' made sence but that comes with being an afx fanboy, I guess.

Harkat wrote:The critical mistake is approaching Burial like chillout "electronica" music, when its so indebted to club/rave shit like Digital, Foul Play, El-B, and just hardcore/jungle in general. Arguably Burial himself has been making that mistake a little bit with his last few releases, but his first album definitely fit alongside the dubstep rollers from Tempa, Tectonic etc.

So many internet producers take a lot of the surface emotional aspects of Burial, the vocals and the strings and the physical, sort of half-broken sounding drums, and try to get that Burial feel. But it just sounds weak as fuck, while something like U Hurt Me has the mean, dark, club-oriented elements in it too.
I don't know. Bedroom producers are "misinterpreting" Burial not unlike Burial "misinterpreted" rave and jungle. To him those things were stories passed on by his brothers. He himself was trying to make urban music rather than dance music.

Taking things out of context and re-imagining them isn't bad. Burial's music doesn't have to mean the same thing to his fans as it does to him I think what sets apart Burial from the self-indulgent copycats is that Burial was just trying to be Burial and his production techniques are what they are because he needed to make tunes a certain way. His drums are shuffly because he wanted his drums to sound like that. His vocals sound deep cuz that's how he remembers them sounding from the old tunes he likes.

The copycats make a mistake by fetishizing certain aspects of his tunes and making them revolve around the element, rather than have the element be apart of a greater whole. Like when modern neuro producers don't care about writing dope tracks but just want to create a bass sound that is more twisted than Noisia's.
