A PPM doesn't give dynamic range information, it's just a smoothed maximum value. An oscilloscope actually shows you a pretty good image of the volume envelope and how the dynamics change over time. An easier tool is a meter with RMS and peak built in so you can compare average to peak (called crest factor) Some meters actually also display the dynamic range as its own readout, which is quite useful.

frequency overlap is natural and not something to be avoided at all cost imo

obviously if your kick and sub are clashing or your mids sound muddy then draw for the eq quick and sort it out

but that's a problem sorted using your eq and your ears and it should be a musical decision


fromm personal experience definitely wouldn't advise just trying to minimise frequency overlap just for the sake of it or out of habit

I have spent hours mixing down tracks that have taken me twenty minutes to write. There is no easy way of doing it and every tracks is different. Some tracks you will just not be able to get a good mix down on and that is just the way it is.
