Kick and snare sound quite muffled, like they've been overly EQ'd and it's taken some of the character out of them.

yes, drums need serious mixdown work. I don't mind the main bass sound imo, but then you throw in some other sounds that seem to really detract from the darkness of the tune...The yoi, and whatever 8 bit style tone you use is so random and out of context. This tune has a lot of potential but if I were you, I'd revisit it with just the drums (more impact/punch/presence) and just your first/main bass sound. Don't utilize a bunch of different sounds for novelty, but instead modulate the bass for novelty.
