Mala sets

There's tons of concerts or club nights that get recorded and the recording never becomes public. Basically the promoter or the venue records for its own archives, or just in case the artist requests the recording afterwards. Most of them don't become public because the artist has to agree to it.

And yeah, that DMZ Outlook set is pretty average. Grabbed the MP3 when they leaked it, listened to it once, put it to trash. Coki's mixing and selection is a shame, Loefah's mixing is pretty good but he looks like nowadays when he's to play a 140bpm set his selection is always the same, and Mala's the only one doing it proper imo. No doubt I would have enjoyed it if I had been there, but listening to it afterwards has very little interest.

On the other hand, the Radio 1 Essential mix and especially the XLR8R mix are biggies. I don't even know how many times I've listened to the XLR8R one. Livin' Different VIP... 'Nuff said.

Doesn't Mala frequently say he'd rather people made the effort to go to the dance and check it out in reality as the music is meant to be heard on a huge system? Hence the reason for not making EVERYTHING available for anyone to DL. Not knocking people wanting new Mystikz sets but I can see the point: the music is sometimes stronger for being a memory rather than a digital file that everyone can get no effort involved. Also, on the point of DMZ as DJs, I've heard plenty of sets (live) when all three were on fire. A studio mix will never have the same quality (as in characteristics) to it as it doesn't have the same atmosphere from which a DJ draws inspiration.

I disagree personally. I think studio mixes are better than live recordings. Live sets are generally worse mixed and less fluid than prepared ones. Also, while I agree it's better to hear live, his last studio mix was over a year ago and it was great, but it would be nice to hear what Mala is rating/playing at the mo.

Of course, there's a few dodgy blends in there, but the progression is amazing. I dunno if Kode9 had planned the tracklist at least a little beforehand but if he hadn't, that's just plain mindblowing

Obviously Flowdan adds up a lot to the whole thing, making it the timeless mix it is. But still. One of the very few mixes I'll probably never get tired of. EVER.

Riddles mate, I didn't mean live sets are better than studio sets, I meant going and seeing the thing live is better than listening to an mp3 of it (and that this is one of the reasons DMZ don't release live recordings much because the medium is meant to be heard on a big rig etc). I don't see much difference between I live recording and studio recording when it comes to mixes cos aint they both recorded via the mixer anyways? You might be right tho.

Yeah being there is amazing, DMZ sets have an atmosphere that not much can compare to. As for recorded in the club vs recorded in a studio, I think there is a big difference. Levels are better, mixing is usually better and I find that studio mixes flow better. You aim to do different things with a studio mix to a live set. Headlining a show you wanna make the crowd have the best time, whereas with a studio mix you wanna showcase the tunes in the best way possible. (imo anyways)

As for a Mala mix, I'd love a new one. Hearing so many "forthcoming Deep Medi" rumours, I wanna hear all this new music and I doubt I'll be able to get round to seeing Mala any time soon.

Yeah fair play I spent time harvesting samples of dubs from Joe Nice shows just to be able to hear new tunes when I couldn't get to a night . Some studio mixes sound too rehearsed tho IMHO. A good Dj has flair and spontaneity which I can't seem to spot in many studio mixes.

Tbf isn't a studio mix supposed to be planned and in a sense rehearsed rather than just done spontaneously

Well yeah obviously, but it's down to the dj mainly though. like say mala were to release a studio mix it would likely be new music from himself and the deep medi crew so he'd know what songs he'd want to show, when and for how long (e.g. Oh this new commodo tune is gonna shake things up but it's gonna be a proper exclusive dub so I'll play it for 32 bars after the drop around the middle when there's more energetic tunes, and it sounds really good with this coki tune so I'll get those two together).

Yep, but I don't reckon they would all be %100 planned. Pinch said he drew from a stack of vinyl he was just playing at that moment and mixed it on the fly for Fabric, not planning too much. Like you say, you get to know the tunes and what works well together and I think they selection becomes natural. But I'm not sure that EVERY studio mix is %100 planned because it really would sound a little too predictable.
