Patatap

Post by wub » Thu Mar 27, 2014 1:25 pm

www.patatap.com
A collaboration between designer/developer Jono Brandel and Japanese musical outfit Lullatone, Patatap is a "portable animation and sound kit" which turns one's browser and keyboard into a musical/visual playback device. It's also a whole lot of fun to play with.

"The motivation behind Patatap is to introduce the medium of Visual Music to a broad audience," Brandel explains on his website. "Artists working in this field vary in discipline, but many aim to express the broader condition of Synesthesia," he continues, "in which stimulation of one sensory input leads to automatic experiences in another. Hearing smells or seeing sounds are examples of possible synesthesia. In the case of Patatap, sounds trigger colorful visual animations." The resulting project hits on an intriguing cross section between web design and interactive music, especially when one identifies the keystrokes which suit their musical taste best and the continuous animation begins.

Basically go the above link and start typing :D

Does this classify as an Audio/Video art installation?

Even more fun on a mobile device, although impossible to capture unless you're using an analog line out recording setup.

We should do a tune ting with this - not necessarily even a contest, just everybody submit tunes made with this. You can capture audio output from the browser with Audacity.

There's an iOS app version out now as well FYI.

I've had problems with stereo mix as well. The rumour is they're trying to prevent people from recording Youtube etc.

^ This is a driver issue, not an Audacity issue per se I believe. It's been talked about on the Audacity forums.

You using ASIO4all, Wub?

This thread is really informative, just found it:

What a pain in the ass tho. So many variables - plug in something to the jack and only then does it become visible to the system? Ugh.

Clipping crackle I think. Been having trouble with it for a while: when I try to record a hardware synth I also get them.

https://soundcloud.com/zeerdub/patatap-1/s-nn7s8
You can hear it in this recording I made of one of the soundbanks . Download enabled if anyone thinks it's useful.
