I've been making music for a long time, in 90's I was signed to Interscope in a grunge band, Nigel Harrison's hot topless Slovakian girl lived with me for a summer, I used Flstudio in the 90's, back when Deadmau5 was just a pimply dude who smoked too much, I built a recording studio with my bear sweaty hands, I've used every major daw, I've been a pro sound designer (meaning I stacked that cash, knuckkas!), I've got an assortment of hard and soft synths and samplers, AND I'm only 1/2 full of shit.

So, I'm answering production questions, none too basic, fire away

The first thing you do is shut down dubturbo, then you go to add/remove programs and uninstall it. Then you demo all the relevant daws on your platform. Then comeback and ask another question.

Martian Americans, and there is absolutely nothing about them on the web as far as I can tell. We only got $25k, and ultimately nothing came of it. I was arrested the night we were signed, and from that my life spiraled a bit out of control (for that summer) by which point I was sleeping in bushes and on the steps of churches throughout the pacific northwest/west coast.

That's my issue as well. Every time I try to use it as suggested I either don't hear anything or it just sounds slightly less focused.

You've got to ask a german if you want to know about ms. I really don't use any mid/side techniques, it is outside of my current aesthetic/process, but I have used it in the past. Like most processing it can be used at the sound/channel/buss or master level.

Very common usage of it is to center the bass and widen the highs. Again this is low level, but this response is directed at our "guests" who should be signing up for accounts, right now.... You can grab an EQ with mid/side capabilities, and there are many now, m/s has come back into vogue. Switch it into m/s mode, on the sides channel try a db or two (depending if you are on a sound/channel, buss, or master - channel do more, buss do less, master do even less) of boost in a high shelf. Play around with the cutoff of the shelf, but anywhere from 1k upwards to 4khz.

Then still in the side channel, make either a low shelf or a low cut (or high pass, same as a low cut, different name) and cut out some lows. If a shelf, drop it depending on the usage, again, more for the channel level processing, less up to the master, but a db or two or more, have to use your ears, and sweep the cutoff up until you get to the body of the sound.

Sidenote:
When thinking about sounds, I've gotten it down to thinking about sound in three sections - sub, body and highs. Sub is 0-100, body goes from 100-1000 and highs are 1k and above. It is just easier for me to think about, and gets me results much quicker.

Now, go into the mid channel, and do the opposite. Get a low shelf and boost it up a db or two or more or less, and sweep it up until around the body. Grab a high shelf and cut a db or two and bring it down to around the body area (1k from that direction).

Your sound/buss/master should now have a more spacious feel. The bass will have more energy, will kick harder, and sounds will seem wider as those highs are more pronounced out on the far sides.

This is a basic usage, you can really mess up sounds (in a good or bad way) through using m/s techniques. Try this as an entry into using the technique.

The next step would be applying this technique to dynamics. How do you think you could use mid/side to address dynamics?

I need to just read a manual and watch some (German?) tutorials on M/S...I try what you suggest on the master with waves H-EQ and it sounds poo-ish most of the time. ;p This is all a good place to start though!

As for your question about dynamics...when dealing with parallel compression it would give you additional control while using an EQ to before the compressor. Like for example you could decrease a slamming low end that was working the compressor too much by taking it out of the sides and some out of the center w/o totally taking all the low end out of the bus. IF that even makes sense.

I don't even really compress much (working with vinyl samples and pretty tame synths) but I was an eq before compressor guy, but now that I actually started listening to compressors, and how much low they pull out, I've started eq'ing after rather than before. I'd low cut or low shelf, with all the potential headroom robbing problems that entails, before the comp. Now I just let the comp's natural circuitry pull those lows out.

But using M/S on dynamics, what happens if you expand your wide highs a bit, and compress your low center? A more solid foot/base/bass, more consistent pressure/weight, with more apparent impact imparted from the sides?

Just want to add in for M/S Eq'ing, heres something for you guys to mess around with, can yeild some really cool results.

This is just a basic idea to play around with:
Automating various types of filter sweeps on the M/S so you can really push a sound through the mix side to side, without using panning. Cool for stuff like risers and cymbal rides. Play around with pretty extreme slopes when working on the effect, and then you can dial it back later if need be.

I.E for riser, sweep the filter so as it rises it starts off only on the sides and as it builds the sweep the filter on the mid so it pushes the riser into the middle of the mix.
