[VIDEO] Luke Abbott makes a track in 10mins

Post by wub » Thu Jun 19, 2014 7:30 pm

With UK producer Luke Abbott's sophomore LP, Wysing Forest, set to see a release via James Holden's Border Community label next week, a new video has surfaced in which the modular synth specialist takes on the challenge of putting together a track in just 10 minutes.

Appearing as part of FACT TV's ongoing Against the Clock video series—which has featured the likes of Addison Groove, Ikonika, and Tom Demac in the past—Abbott relies on his skills as a modular expert throughout the clip, connecting cables and twisting an array of knobs to swiftly craft a piece of synth-flushed techno. At the end of the 10-minute challenge, Abbott then talks us through the gear utizlied during the course of the track, giving extra insight into the man's production process

Yeah wasn't the best. I never know whether modular patches are any good or not...that just sounded pretty basic, same with the drum placement.

That and you get absolutely no insight into what he was doing, even if you did (for some reason) like the sounds.

Not to be a hater, but that was pretty awful. I wonder sometimes how "prepared" some of these Beat the Clock vids are at the time. I mean...it is only ten minutes, so I wonder if this was true from-scratch. Not that I am terribly impressed by the Tempest as a drum synth these days, but those have to be some of the worst Tempest drum sounds I have ever heard.

This is pretty on par with a lot of modular guys though...you see these giant setups that someone has thousands invested in and their videos are basically "listen to these sick 10K bleeps I just made!"

To beat the dead horse...if he is doing this totally 100% from scratch (which I feel like these Beat the Clocks aren't always) it at least seems he has some sense of what he is doing. Also, take into consideration that hardware is just fashionable again. I don't know Luke Abbott and am not making this statement about him, but sometimes I wonder if musicians keep hardware around to make themselves look more impressive in videos etc. Because honestly, as far as releases go, I don't think most people are really going to know if you use the hardware to make your music or not.

Wait, we expected it to be good? The title kind of gave it away.

Some of them show some interesting work-flow or techniques. Or are you referring to the fact it's Luke Abbott? I have no idea who he is.
