What is Feminism?
I struggle to get a clear answer from people I know personally who identify as such.
Could anybody recommend good, preferably brief tbh, literature? I'm willing to read longer stuff, just got a lot on my plate atm.
To those who have a good and preferably unbiased grasp of it, what does it do for the global community? What can we expect of it? Will it always exist? Why wasn't it incorporated in the larger human rights movements we saw through much of the 20th century? What does it take for certain authors, for instance, to be considered feminist?

Re: What is Feminism?
The biggest problem with feminism right now…
may be - that there are a number of different camps
with diametrically opposite philosophies - hugely conflicting…
and so when you say what is feminism…it has to be a multi-facetted answer.
I've never studied it formally - so I have no idea what the academics are saying.
And I'm certainly not un-biased.
I defiantly have clear leanings as far as what camp I'm leaning towards.
But if you wanna hear a real female - a very liberal one
map out some issues - I can tell some of the story...

Re: What is Feminism?
equality of the sexes, as with any movement there are a lot of different interpretations, personally i think everyone should therefore count themselves a feminist

Re: What is Feminism?
As far as i understand it you are a feminist simply by virtue of not actively suppressing women in some way. Equality, basically.

Re: What is Feminism?
A lot of attractive females get bear traps thrown at them all the time…
Did you litter a bear trap at a girl who is insufferably surrounded by them?
- for no reason - other than she'd look good on your dick?
Japanese would call that - Fox on a Stick
No card - Fair play to her.

…I wouldn't approve of her calling the cops though…
I think she should have just verbally assaulted you with impunity.
-because a sense of humor is a good thing to have.

Re: What is Feminism?
equality doesn't mean - free to join them…
There are some serious systematic issues
in the way society functions - in regards to females...
and females shouldn't just be free to exploit it - we need it changed.

anyway, imo women and men are inherently not equal and i think we should celebrate our differences not try and homogenise the genders.
Of course we should try and stop sexual abuse and what not but in the same way as we should try and stop all violence. imo there will always be bellends doing bad things regardless of what you do

Re: What is Feminism?
I have a very real story…
The first time in my life - I fully realized there was a problem…
a feminine problem - that was specifically - influencing my behavior.
I am not, and have never been - a scared girl.
I'm not scared of - and have never been - afraid to go places - do things - be out there…
In fact - you could always find me somewhere on the block checking shit out…
Later in my life - I'm thinking I was in my early 30's
Very comfortable and confident in functioning in the world…
I was living in Philly and wanted to goto this party just outside of town…
and so I drive there and find a spot to park that allows me to watch who is going in…
And I am very deliberately screening the people going in - and I'm getting turned off.
It's groups of like - 5 or more guys - 5 or more guys - 5 or more guys…
and as I'm sitting there I become aware of a very specific...
- imaginary scenario - that I am avoiding
...everything is very specific in this story….
and I played it out in my head and I was appalled.

Re: What is Feminism?
I've told this story before….
The thing that I was avoiding was this.
I imagined a crowd of guys and a - very few - attractive females…
dirty dancing at the front, just acting dumb, having a good time…
…the girls getting the guys all wound up…
drunkness - and what happens is….
At least one of the guys in the "group of 5"
Is aggressive and isn't happy about getting blue balled…
so he decides he's getting laid no matter what…
so he approaches me - a significantly less attractive female - alone - in the shadows…
couldn't possibly rebuff his advances…is offended again
- decides that violence isn't an issue because he doesn't really like me anyway.
That's fucked up isn't it.
In the meantime - I'm putting the stank eye on the "sleazy" girls…
- because they aren't the ones who have to field the violence -
of their own intensification.
But they don't understand because - they - are stupid.

Re: What is Feminism?
Basically I believe that limiting myself to the equality of all sexes limits the description of my beliefs. If I call myself an egalitarian then all people are covered in my belief for equality.OGLemon's post on revleft wrote: I believe in the equality of all people. I don't call myself a feminist, but I do support the goals of feminism.
Re: What is Feminism?
No, by that line of reasoning, then everyone who hates violence is an anarcho-capitalist. It's the type of communication used by feminists to lure in people to their cause.wilson wrote:As far as i understand it you are a feminist simply by virtue of not actively suppressing women in some way. Feminism is best defined as the socio-political movement intent on ending the patriarchy, that it describes as the social construct that privileges men and oppresses women.
You can't have feminism without it, but you can definitely have movements or beliefs for gender-equity that are not influenced by feminist theory.

Re: What is Feminism?
They wanna dance up to me and say "YOU'RE JUST JEALOUS..."
and I'm like… "NO - YOU NEED TO GET OVER HERE AND SERVICE YOUR BOY. DUMMY"
How many guys accept their friend going to the party and doing all this…
You guys have a name for this type don't you?!!

Now - this is where I get beat up by those OTHER feminists
Who say it's the violent man - not the dress….
and I'm like- YOU'RE THE SAME PEOPLE!!! Constantly sexing up…
You're illiciting boners and asking men not to feel….WTF!!!
Take some responsibility. Button that up.

Re: What is Feminism?
I really dont believe the notion has to be supported in politics. It's much more general. It's more like if we had known already that we have women that can do stuff but we forgot and now it's super embarassing.
So for a while it might take form similar to something like affirmative action or be mostly symbolic instead of being completely egalitarian, but that's ok.
We need to be embarassed by where we've ended up basicly.
