Fixing a "tube-ish" Mix?

Post by Phatscout » Fri Jun 27, 2014 2:17 am

Ok, so I know a bunch of y'all are about to shit on me because I'm asking for mix-advice on a big, girthy ass house track but it's cause I luv u guys, ok.

So this is some shit I've been working on (the embed isn't gonna work cause it's set to private, sorry about that)
Soundcloud

Now, I dunno see, in theory everything should work out cause none of the tracks in the mix are colliding yet, I dunno something seems off about the mix. Like it feels like its being played through like a plastic tube or some shit.

Can anyone help man?
(Also, in-retrospect brickwalling the shit out of the mix was probably a bad idea considering I'm asking for mix help)

Edit: Alright I put up the wavs on my Dropbox

ITS SO LOUDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!

Its also has an awkward stereo field. I think where your problem is, is that all you've got is a really flat sounding pad and a kick drum but boosted the hell out of it so it just sounds plasticy now.

Ozone by any chance?

The problem is probably with EQ.

Ozone by any chance?
Yeah I just picked a random Ozone preset before export :corntard:

I put up an un-Ozoned one (check the un-bricked one) so try checking in there. I'm checking the Ozone imager right now and I don't really see any big problems, though you seem to be on the money in regards to stereo weirdness.

I'm at work, don't really like downloading non-work stuff onto the computer but i'll check the un-maxxed version when I get home.

Ozone can make things sound plastic-ie REALLY easily. Its maximizer and Exciter have a VERY distinct sound, I would stay away from these plugins. Its compressor is really nice though.

I would add more low-mid to the pad and bring everything high-end apart from the pad up, maybe even sweep the pad down from about 8k > 18k a gentle slope and -2/3db.

"Tiny-ass room house" hahahahaha :)

The word that jumps to my mind is "flat" let's have another few listens.....

Okay that high-end is hella compressed which is probably adding to this "flatness" probably some preset added at the end on ozone. Soooo turn Ozone off :) it's clearly doing more damage here than good. Post a clip without any master buss processing on and let's have a proper listen.

In general though, it just feels flat, we need more dynamics there, get some stuff moving up the top of the mix, push out the mids in some elements (we're talking mix here forget the master buss we need to work on clarity and creating space) once we got that locked maybe focus on getting the groove a lil tighter between kick side chain and everything. Atm the kick isn't as strong as it could be and this kick needs to be uber strong in this genre otherwise the mix fails.

Main lead needs to be more stereo. Either try to make the existing one more stereo, or layer it with other really stereo synths. When I'm talking about really stereo synths, I'm talking about highpassed stereo reverb supersaws or sumting like that.
