J da IMO, was one of the guys responsible for getting dubstep to the masses..

Love the mix up of styles, it open my eyes to other acts i didn't know too much about.. was awesome that he also helped up n coming producers too.. the hot off the press section was great..

Still listen to his shows now, funny as some of the tunes he was plying back then are only just coming out.. (Slt - Blue Eyes, tune!!)

Still can't understand why the BBC stopped the show.. big mistake IMO...

Good to hear he's still playing out tho...

those jingles were funny, something like ; one guy to another in a scared sounding voice: " gonna duck, gonna hide, he's coming. WHO? J da Flex, he's evil blood...

RESPECT! J Da Flex !! iwould reaaly like to know why Underground knowledge did have to end...

SAME HERE......I was astounded when I first heard his show. Could not believe what garage had spawned... been on the hunt for this stuff ever since.

He played some track called Horror show....no beats....just fuckin evil sub bass and twisted sounds

I was also gutted when underground knowledge was axed. J was the only reason I listened to 1x.

This is a reply to my question about why the show was axed. I replied that the show was not just for southern england but had a large following worldwide - lame:

You may find it a shock to get a reply, but I do believe that all 1Xtra listeners where possible should get answers to issues close to mind.

May I first say that as the man who hired J Da Flex three years ago and then had to let him go, the decision was not taken lightly. There will always be someone disappointed with change and some very happy. Although I let J Da Flex go it came as no surprise to him as we had been communicating regularly and his change in musical direction was always going to make us a station make some harsh choices. I'm not sure how long you have been listening to the station, but if you have been for at least two years you would be fully aware that J Da Flex has tried to redefine his sound. His show fell under the UKG banner one which at the point of his departure he was not happy with (I must say nor was I). At the point of his last show it was clearly a broken beat show and often 30% of his show was a duplicate of Benji B's show. You can imagine hiring an a man for a leading role and years later finding out that it was a woman! This was kind of the equivalent.......

The ongoing talks we had was along the line of him being hired to present a UKG show and now it was something else. I'm not debating that it was not a good show, but not what he was signed up for. Being clued up on the scene I can assure you this sound is very much focused around a London/South scene. We must remember two things:

1. We are a national radio station and a show appealing to just mainly the South is not an option.
2. I wanted a UKG show not a UKG show which mutated over time into something else with no consultation.

I'm no novice - I help set up Kiss 100 was a DJ there and in charge of all specialist output.. I produced over 5 specialist shows at Radio 1 before moving to set up 1Xtra. I'm aware of all the new musical genres ands it's importance to reflect them. Benji B highlights many of the artists which J Da Flex did and many of the guests he has featured have appeared over time on the network so I have no fear that the sound will still be a part our musical makeup. Should at a later date I feel that this sound warrants a national show then I will look again. I do hope that you will still listen to 1Xtra and perhaps if you spot new talent or a sound drop Lee a line.

In the meantime thank you for your comments and I hope this message (will not bring back your DJ) goes someway to explaining this change.

J Da Flex back in the 'mutha*%ckin' hizzouse

Post by j da flex » Wed Sep 27, 2006 8:20 am

I Really appreciate all the love that's been shown towards me and Underground knowledge. I do miss doing the show and all that came with it but I guess change is good sometimes.

I've taken a long time outta music to find out whether i still wanted to continue with it to the same capacity as before and you know what...?? I'm coming back.

i'll be returning to radio within the next month or two...keep ur ears to the ground!

Bless

Big up mr Flex!

Anyways, I've got a bunch of mp3s of Underground Knowledge shows kicking about on CDrs if anyone wants downloads.

The other day I found the first time he ever played Vex'd - in his 'send in your tunes' competition (what was it called...?), when it was still on Saturday.

Anyway, was wicked.

I'll look out some dates/tracklists i anyones interested
