On 'dubstep'

is it just my perspective or is so-called 'dubstep' so ambiguous that it doesn't actually describe anything specific? i'm not really comfortable using it, I call the tunes 'hyperdub' or 'future-dub' or the trusty 'bass music' 'deep medi music' or just say each artist is it's own genre, ie. Mala, Coki, Loefah, Burial, etc. really make their own sound as have others like Pink Floyd, Autechre, Aphex Twin, Meat Beat Manifesto, the Orb, Future Sounds of London, 808 State, Tom and Jerry, J Dilla, Steve Gurley or El-B. Seems to me that we've been in the times of musical fusion for about 15 years. the word is about as vague and ridiculous as 'IDM'

As far as I can see the word 'dubstep' is a contrived marketing ploy by the Ammunition Promotions public relations dude.

there is no problem except one that late to the party true dubstep 'fans' seem to make for themselves.

the word dubstep was at the time it was concieved used to describe a range of music that was impossible to pigeonhole as anything else. having 2014 dubstep fans arguing with themselves over the word being too loosely defined is stupid when you think about it in context.

End of the day, you can play a "dubstep" set that starts at 130 and finishes at 150, containing music from all over the world, going back almost 15 years and being made to this day. People just need to listen to music they like and shut the fuck up. Boring discussions about "what is dubstep? where's it going? is it dead?" can fuck off. Just go to a gig, have a dance and enjoy yourself.

Sharing music and having discussion is important, but trying to get a deeper understanding of a scene is pointless imo, most of the time is it just used to create divides between people, out of sheer snobbery.

i think the problem that a lot of the navel gazing crew have with dubstep is that they don't actually leave their houses to go and listen to it in a rave/club environment. too easy to sit behind a keyboard with a playlist of dubstep tunes on, arguing about the defintion of a word in relation to a sound.

all that melts away when the lights are down and the bass is up.

I agree with what's been said about the uselessness of the "what is dubstep" debate, but you have to remember that in many places around the world there aren't any decent dubstep nights. I live in Spain and there is no scene at all. I've been living in Valencia for 4 years and the only "dubstep artist" I've seen advertised on a flyer so far was Borgore...

Even in Barcelona and Madrid there are very few events.
I would definitely go to dubstep dances more often if I could, but the only option I'm left with is booking a plane. That's a bit expensive for a club night innit

I would love to do that. In fact, I'll definitely do it at some point. A System night in autumn would be sweeeeet

And I gotta say, MASSIVE respect to Diego, his crew had Joe Nice in Sevilla in March and I went. They welcomed me as a long time friend and I spent a lovely time there. And needless to say the party was amazing!!! Joe smashed it proper

i think there are a lot of people who are hesitant to say they like dubstep and much rather name a certain label or artist. not because the term isn't specific enough, but because they want to distance themselves from that stuff that most clueless people perceive as dubstep based on what they see/hear in tv ads or on their timelines.

Every. Single. Time. Recently I had a co-worker ask me when I worked this weekend and I was like I don't, I took it off to go to a show. Said I was going to New York for a warehouse party (reconstrvct XX) and of course the person immediately thinks it's some Skrillex like shit and starts asking if I know that Dubstep is losing popularity. Which I responded by saying that I don't care about how popular it is. Like seriously why would I care how popular it is, all I care about is the feeling I got when I was in that dark room with a massive sound system shaking my very soul; absolute vibes.

v true, i hate that conversation when asked what i've been listening too, option a say just dubstep and have bare people just assume you mean brostep or go like 'but not that brostep shit just deep sounds' and sound like a fucking bellend
