FROSH dubstep producer for appreciation and RESPECT threadz

Post by diaspora » Fri Oct 12, 2007 11:33 am

So in the last few months I have been thinking, you know. I don't want to be jumping on any bandwagon. But with a sound so fresh, how can you NOT want to explore it? I'm 28 and living in Southern California. I have been tinkering with sound for as long as I can remember on shitty PCs mostly. In fact I currently use a shitty PC to try and emulate, or originate, the sort of sound I want to hear. When I say shitty, I mean shitty, like pentium III and 256 megs of RAM shitty. Like creative soundblaster EXTIGY shitty right? So here I am, swept up. I'm saving up, for a decent set up, but in the meantime, how could I not want to fuck with sound? Anyways this is just a sort of hello to this dubstepforum PRODUCTION board. Anyways like I said, I can't help but make little beats here and there, so I wanted to share a beat I been working on, as an introduction to the boards, to say what's up.

The big challenge as I see it, is not to seek raw emulation. I mean, I find myself thinking, what can the section of the world I belong to bring to the table? As an American I am repeatedly finding myself in AWE of what comes out of the UK. I just wouldn't be satisfied merely emulating that. I never want to pollute this music, because I respect it. So how do I move forward?

I am asking myself, "what do I have to offer?", you know, what do I have to share? That's an important question. Because if you ain't got anything to share, then don't waste any of our time right?

So maybe it's LA gangsta, maybe it's underground hard knocks, who knows. I believe that IN TIME my output will be proof enough, but in the meantime, I tinker with beats, go to school, drink beers, blaze chalwas, etc. Just trying to find my way in this big nexus of sound.

Please let me know what you think of the levels on this first shared work in progress. I am using a very rudimentary setup, but i'm trying to understand about volume and levels. The important stuff. Anyways, the bassline hasn't much flair at this point (mostly because I like to take the accents out, so as to allow people I know to spit over the beat easily). So hello and respect from Southern California. Respect due to all who love this music. Let me know about the levels. I know the bassline needs to be more active, thanks.

I also want to share something I picked up the other day. It is a sample pack from who in the fuck knows where. Actually, the name is in the title or whatever, but I thought there were a few bass sounds worth the download alone. Some things there. Reeces and whatnot whose creation questions seem to litter the production forums. Nothing like a good dub collection, but you know, some neat little samples to fuck with. So I offer it up on my webspace as free token of kinship with any on the board who may find it useful. It's a RAR file. And there aren't like 20 COKI-esque basslines and 200 "JAH" shouts haha. Just a few decent sounds I found and wanted to share.

So all in all I just wanted to touch base and say hello to all the people on this forum. And let yall know that after many months spent lurking, I'm ready to say hello. Much respect and open mindedness to all onBOARD. Thanks and see you around.

Hello, welcome
The drums are sounding alright cant really comment on production because im at work listening on shitty headphones.
bass sounds very unexciting and rather preset like - might I suggest resampling it and messing with it.
The bass also needs some rhythm to it, rather than just the single notes. Despite being a technique that has been done to death, a little lfo action on the bass may give it some movement.
Also - some form of melody/hook would also do wonders.

+1 on the resampling. play with putting the bass in some sort of space via reverb... or shifting spaces, etc. i can hear that, melody-wise, it wants to go somewhere.

nice bit of atmosphere in the groove. definitely better than a by-the-numbers wobbler for your first bit.

Massive respect for coming w/ such openess in your explanation of who you are and what you want to create. Always space for that!

"I never want to pollute this music, because I respect it. So how do I move forward?"

Maybe by polluting yrself with this music instead. and then just seeing what comes out of it.

pollution is always the way forward imo. unpoluted often just translates as boring and by the book.

very nice,
i like the sound...
even the bass dont sound too shitty too me,
interesting idea to cut the attack for the mc,
:o
no need to do that, the reppers will rep when they like the beat,
making space in this early state of production is kind of weird,
for dubstep is mostly instrumental music aint it?
dont mind being a copycat
we are all riding the big time vibe, no?

but te music very good
more variation
some chops
a littlr melody
some wicked
synt bass

u there
welcome

nice introduction should have done something like that :D

I live in Victorville, the High Desert area of San Bernardino County. Thanks on all the advice yall, I'm taking it to heart and listening. Hooks are the hardest fucking thing to me right now. Anyone else way too hard on themselves, and feel like if your shit can't stand next to the major players then you are failing at life? Haha. On a side note, what are some of the more mystic labels I could look into? I really feel Hyperdub, Skull Disco, you know, they are deep and have a mystic quality to them, somewhat experimental. What other labels might I wanna look into for some more mystic sounding shit. Cool. Thanks for the warm welcome, look forward to being a part of the community.
