Re: THE SECRET NINJA DUBS CLUB
spent most of my none callcentre time on these this week
went far too far on this one i think and it got a bit moist
Soundcloud
so made a club version for the 'b-side', spent a lot more time working out how to do a proper bassline and use compression more effectively on this one
Soundcloud
feedback would be lovely
edit: fucked up the mix bare on that second one by only doing it in headphones, ended up all bass,
will change the link later this evening

It's sort of demanding to listen to. The sounds are fine and there's a vibe going.
I reckon you meant to do a real minimalist track (?) and that is why there's not a whole lot of different evolving percussion sounds, right?
But the rythm itself is very steppy without an underlying hihat or various other perc bits going at atleast 16th tbh. You could, if you don't want that sort of 'light metronome'-principle going, slightly move the kicks and snares around and enforce the groove by have it swing (slightly and not quantized swing).
Because 'manual swing' can kind of outline or exaggerate the impact of a snare and kick sound because it exaggerates or prolongs the intended movement. In the way that drums are responsible for most of the 'moving around'/direction.
Another way could be to have the most clinically sparse ocd arrangement where you do a shit load of small fades on every sound and completely remove any freq content in a sound that you don't need by filter or eq.
But that approach takes a while to master and it's anal and less musical.
But I'm saying you could, because I get the appeal and it's still more about attitude than any technicality - it just takes a long time ....

Re: THE SECRET NINJA DUBS CLUB
cheers hubb, yeah can see that, the first version was really just a loop that got out of hand so left it q minimal
second one yeah, i get you, left it fairly simple because i'd spent a lot of time recently on stuff with constant break beats and wanted to make it simpler, like you get from the heavy 3rd and more implied 4th in a lot of dubstep, but i definitely see that the beat drags especially under such a heavy arrangement+ could do with more propulsion,
i think i kind of make a beat at the start as a base and get unwilling to change it up that much
