Top 10 Dubstep Albums
Re: Top 10 Dubstep Albums
Excluding Mixed cd's and compilations (so just artist albums) :
I'm also only listing Dubstep. No new skool thing, no 2-step.
Vex'd - Degenerate [planet mu]
Burial - Burial [hyperdub]
Cyrus - From the Shadows [tectonic]
Kode9 & The Spaceape - Memories of the Future [hyperdub]
Burial - Untrue [hyperdub]
Pinch - Underwater Dance Hall [tectonic]
Kryptic Minds - One of Us [Swamp 81]
iTAL tEK - Cyclical [planet mu]
2562 - Aerial [tectonic]
Clubroot - II : MMX
there's about 10 more I could name, especially "hybrids" from before 2005 or after 2010, but I consider these to be some of the best artist releases from the pure era of dubstep.

Re: Top 10 Dubstep Albums
I actually don't think there is 10 albums I would rate fully in the genre either because they don't flow well or have that many good tunes on them. Anyways, the albums I've appreciated/come to appreciate more now as my tastes have changed:
Guido - Anidea: its getting no love here, but its a seriously good album. It sounds so colourful and little snippets of it are on repeat in my head so often. It almost sounds like a live performance with very real instruments coming in and out, it sound as close to radio-ready but quality dubstep should do. Its amazing, anyone into the purple sound will lap this up big time.
Burial - Burial/Untrue: no explanation needed, you've all heard it all before.
Scuba - Triangulation: the only direction Scuba went in that I fully got into, there wasn't really any "center piece" tracks for me that made the album great, they were just all top notch.
VA - Dubstep Allstars vol. 2: A valid and still strong introduction to dubstep.
Mount Kimbie - Crooks & Lover: It's just a nice sounding album that works in so many contexts: live, on a bus, walking the streets, sitting in on a rainy Sunday, hangovers, the list goes on. A very cohesive album after the build up of EPs.
Kryptic Minds - One of Us: The dungeon sound or whatever is a bit bland to me now, but this is still a very good album that fits that sound. The second album bored me to pieces, maybe because I am past that sound or was hoping for something a bit different. Regardless, check it out.
That's about it. Singles/EPs tend to do more for me I reckon, like Medi singles are great because they are often large, anticipated tunes. I was going to stick Rustie's Glass Swords but that'd probably be pushing it for "dubstep".

Re: Top 10 Dubstep Albums
This thread seemed like the best resource on the whole internet for people new to dubstep, especially for those like me who like listening to an album all the way through. So I compiled everyone's favorites whether they had more than 10 or only 1-2. I placed albums higher than others with the same amount of votes if the same artist had other albums that showed up. I made a total of 14 top dubstep albums for anyone who finds this thread in 2014 and on to see.
26 Burial - Untrue
17 Burial - Burial
13 Vex'd - Degenerate
11 2562 - Aerial
10 Skream - Skream!
10 Kode9 & the Spaceape - Memories of The Future
10 Pinch - Underwater Dancehall
7 Distance - Repercussions
7 Digital Mystikz - Return II Space
7 Benga - Diary of an Afro Warrior
7 Martyn - Great Lengths
6 Distance - My Demons
6 Kryptic Minds - One Of Us
6 Silkie - City Limits
Of note:
*Many chose not to vote for compilations, but of those that did, Roots of Dubstep was on the most lists by a good margin.
*Every Dubstep allstars compilation from 1 to 7 except 4 got at least one vote. So if you're new to dubstep, downloading all of those could be a great start.
*Clubroot and Scuba each made it onto many lists, but neither had a single album that was unanimously favored.
*Headhunter and The Bug fared similarly.
*Benga, Skream, and DMZ are some of the original innovators of dubstep and each had an album on the list.
*Burial and Distance both have 2 albums that made the list.
*Burial took an impressive 1-2 sweep. Some people grouped the 2 albums together as 1 of their 10, but even the people that separated the albums chose to include both on their list for the most part.
On a personal note, I'm new to dubstep (the original UK variety at least). I had heard both of Skream's albums and most of his EPs as well as Afro Warrior before stumbling upon this thread. All of these are going to make it into my "Now Playing" in time; I just need to get some decent subs! Also, I'm going to play some of these on our sound system where I work. Most of my coworkers will not enjoy it as much as I will.
For now, I'm hooked on Burial. If you're expecting all dubstep to be intense like Vex'd, then Burial will sound very different. It borders on ambient at times. Regardless of what style you would call it, it's really good music. The vocals make it sound kind of like Moby, but it's much darker and more brooding. Think the Bourne Identity meets the Dark Knight. It's somehow both sad and optimistic at the same time. It's fantastic. It seems like the most appropriate time and place to listen to Burial would be 3am in your house when it's lightly raining outside and the room is dimly lit by a 2-watt bulb and you're naked playing twister with someone.

nice shout, this does come up q a bit, but a lot of the albums don't feel like a complete musical work more than a compilation and that one doesnobody wrote:Don't just say it, click it!GreenWaffle wrote:Big ups man

Exactly, there aren't many dubstep albums that I consider 'albums'

Return II Space is not an album is it? If it is though, it's probably one of the strongest.
