Deadzone - Release the Kraken (Need Mixdown advice!!!)

Post by Noizemaker » Tue Sep 02, 2014 11:08 pm

UPDATED VERSION BELOW VVVVVVVVV
Hey guys, I'm hoping to make this my first label release, but that means this mix has to be clean as fuck. Help lead me in the right direction. Thanks!

This is pretty sick! I think the drums need more punch. Also Im curious to know what program you used to do that? Because i wouldn't mind help to mixing this for you.

Thanks. Daw is FL Studio, Bass sounds made with massive, ambient stuff is nexus, absynth, samples, etc.

Edit: Is this version better? It has some different drum samples in it. Soundcloud

It needs to be side chained.

This is the Fruity Limiter Method for sidechaining (I personally do like this method however I hear its cleaner or better BUT IDK i tried it and didnt like it)

Thanks, but I'm already sidechaining the shit out of this track. Volume sidechaining on everything by the kick and an eq dip at 200hz by the snare. Idk what else to do.
Imma check out those drum samples tho....

Lol, I'm also stuck in FL10. I have 11, but its not the producer edition, so I always use 10....

With you both on that one aha,, what compressors are you using for your drums? A personal favourite of mine is waves H-Comp (you should be able to get a crack), it can make samples so snappy and punchy! I think the drums are something you need to concentrate on, have you parallel compressed them? Don't worry tho, drums can be a bitch and when it comes to mixdown I too struggle on drums sometimes. Still though big track!

I don't think I'm compressing the drums at all. I had a maximus compressor on them, but it made them to drawn out and "un-snappy", which made my sidechaining sound all sorts of weird.

What are you sidechaining to? I'll link you a video of parallel compression too with a good free comp, parallel makes your drums stand out so much more

I do this with lightly compressed samples, and it works and it's pretty easy! Hope it helps
also yeah I'll send you some samples, I'll get onto it soon!

Kick sidechains the overall volume of almost everything in the track on various levels. I think the longer, bass heavy, tail on my kick (in the older 5.3 version) ducked my volumes too long and made it sound muffled. Thee new samples in 6.7 don't do that, but they don't have the same low thud that I like in my kicks.

I'm thinking about just sidechaining the kick to a 100hz eq duck on most channels, that might work better.

Oh, and snares are sidechaining a 200hz eq duck on most channels.

I'll check out that parallel compression vid!
Thanks!

^^^^Wtf... oh well, my reply is in there, I guess you can still read it.

It looks like I can just duplicate the kick channel and send it to a compressor and then mix the two together. But which one controls the sidechaining?

decent tune for sure. i felt like a lot of the mid-bass synths could be filtered a bit to create some more momentum. I noticed the snare has a lot of reverb when it opened up, but you cant tell at the drop aside from a few spots where it becomes less "full" so i would either eq the synths to allow the reverb through, or maybe just cut the reverb at the drop so it doesnt cloud the mix up any.

sidechaining could also solve this problem, but that has already been mentioned :)

Thanks for the response! Its a different snare in the bridge than in the drop. the one in the drop has no reverb.

yeah that's it, but one wet and one dry! you can use any, but ease of use I'd say route the wet channel and the dry channel to a "drum master" channel. then you sidechain on that channel with volume or whatever else like your ducks at 100hz. you'll still have your original kick to trigger the sidechaining of course Soundcloud
