Re: Scotland And Secession from UK
seems strange that foreigners who have been resident for just 2 years can vote
yet Scots resident for work in England, can't vote.
I had Scottish grandparents on one side...if I had the vote,
I'd vote for independence even if only to experiment with long-denied responsibility for our finances and foreign affairs.
Any reluctance for me to so vote
would come from my knowing that the British Government, without Scottish socialists,
would be more right wing and representative of the wealthy
so I'd be leaving my working cousins in the lurch.
Mind, that could be solved by inviting Cornwall, Wales, Isle of Man, N.Ireland & Brittany into a secular Celtic Federation*
and be damned the south-eastern Roman/Angle/Saxon/Norman horde.

o & another (big) reason for independence:
if English becomes a "foreign" language for them
the Scots will have to stop bastardizing it
& actually pronounce it intelligibly.

Great Britain will always be Great Britain - it's the name of the island, not the nation.mks wrote:Would Great Britain have to change its name. What about the United Kingdom?
England, Scotland and Wales will still be Great Britain.
England, Wales and Northern Ireland will be the United Kingdom
I'll be a bit sad if they leave, but I think I'll probably get over it.

As he's not Scottish, this isn't really an issue.Nihilism wrote:The only problem that i can think about is that they can't call Aphex Twin an UK artist after a positive referendum

after independence, he'll become one to get Art Council grants

All I hope is that the secession won't complicate/add lots of paperwork to me studying there

Yeah, something went wrong there. But doesn't the same goes up for Ireland? I've read a lot about the 'troubles', but was/isn't separation a better solution?wub wrote:As he's not Scottish, this isn't really an issue.Nihilism wrote:The only problem that i can think about is that they can't call Aphex Twin an UK artist after a positive referendum

The Republic of Ireland (where Aphex is from) has been a seperate country since 1914.Nihilism wrote:Yeah, something went wrong there. But doesn't the same goes up for Ireland? If "better solution" includes a century of sectarian violence and Cranberries records...

Re: Scotland And Secession from UK
btw, is there an absolute, ratified & surveyed border between England & Scotland or will it revert to Hadrian's Wall?
And will it become fortified to keep the Scots from getting out?

Re: Scotland And Secession from UK
I'm thinking a land war could help settle the boundary.
Re: Scotland And Secession from UK
Looking at it from a ultra-longterm point of view, it's complete fucking madness tbh. England and Scotland were just about *always* enemies; even at times when the English were too busy tearing themselves apart or being torn apart by another foe, Scotland would choose to cosy up to enemies of the English state rather than its closest neighbour. France time and time again, the Netherlands, Scandinavian invaders/Vikings, Jacobites... that went on for most of a millennium.nowaysj wrote:I'm thinking a land war could help settle the boundary.
It was only really because of Bess' [may she live on eternally within us all] failure to have an heir that it ever changed. Jacobitism had pretty much been beaten in England by a succession of wildly effective and popular Henries and an Elizabeth, but Catholic Mary, the Frenchest Scotswoman ever had the child that Elizabeth never did. It's only that stroke of luck that put the Jacobeans on the throne - thus settling the major Scots/English quarrel of the time. James I/VI took up both thrones and a century later we'd realised that our squabbles were so futile (well, that and Scotland's economy was about to hit a very serious brick wall following Darien) that we might as well just become the same country.
Following that, we get 500 years of total and utter peace. Nothing but good times interspersed with national rivalries kept largely to the sports field. "ANYONE BUT ENGLAND" might seem a bit frustrating sometimes, but it's much easier to stomach when it only applies to the football pitch and not the battlefield.
There are always good reasons for independence at any scale, whether it's Cornish or Scottish, especially in times of relative peace and prosperity like post-WW2 Europe has seen, but there are almost always more for unity. That peace and prosperity may not last forever.
It'll probably just be fine though. I bet you won't even need to use a passport.

Re: Scotland And Secession from UK
Aphex Twin is Cornish anyway. Which according to some of my mates should be its own country anyway.
Re: Scotland And Secession from UK
the way you describe the relationship:
with secessionist instincts quelled by them being member states of a Commonwealth
and having equal representation in the federal upper house (senate)
maybe the UK would've been better off having states or cantons en lieu of a "united (English) kingdom"
but that's history!
And history may be the prime reason for Scotland going with independence...
opportunities for them to shed English dominion are rare
and, after all, they could reunite on a negotiated basis that could include the other nations.
reminds me of the New South Wales/Queensland relationshipmagma wrote:..we'd realised that our squabbles were so futile that we might as well just become the same country...
