- Yes but you will need a decent soundcard and monitors

can you dj from them using mp3s

- yes, via many different mediums, but i would recommend a fast external hard drive (firewire)

is it wiser to get vinyl decks?

- would depend on the circumstances?

My Macbook is rock solid and perfect for performing live. :)

I perform using 320s mp3 and AIFs and its cool,
I know loads of other Laptop performers in Brighton who almost all use Macbooks.

thats all you need right there computer wise

you'll also want a djing interface like traktor scratch or serato or torq

you can also get a midi controller like this to control the software when there's no turntables/mixer present

with that mixer/midi controller and a macbook, you'd have no need for cd decks

those spec's you mentioned are all sweet...only thing you might need to get is an extra 1gb of ram, which should only set you back about 40 quid

always worth it!

also check this out bcos on the old ibooks it was always the point that you could upgrade them yourselves with the tiniest bit of know how
on the mac mini you cant do this anymore (bcos theyve crammed so much in a small space)- so you need to go to a dealer to get it upgraded (ie labour and parts charge)

not sure if this is true of the macbook (wouldn't expect it to be) but if its the case might be worth getting the ram installed at the factory rather than shelling out more later on

Sorry for the silly question, I've never been into the Mac thing...
Since Macs are going with Intel CPUs, what makes them so different from PCs with same specs?

For me its the fact that it's OSX rather than Windows + all of the internal hardware are made to compliment each other.

Plenty of Pros - Im sure there are a few cons (but I havent found any)

But people will argue about mac vs pc till the cows come home.

the mac operating system is in my experience faaaar more stable, i've never seen a mac crash, my pc crashes far too often.

major disadvantage is that alot of software and vst's are pc only, especially freeware stuff...

I'm skeptical about this... I mean Macs are more stable than PCs but imo the 2 key reasons are :
* cheap built PC : you can have the same specs with a difference of $/€200 or more. No wonder one will be less stable than the other...
* security issues : Macs are far less vulnerable than PCs but should you run all usual security programs, you won't experience any related crashes or bugs.

So it's up to you to have a stable PC.

EDIT : on another note, every new Windows OS comes with its load of bugs/compatibility issues/... that's for certain. So was XP and so is Vista (but Vista is a pain in the ass anyway). Usually it's wise to wait a year or 2 before upgrading.
