I've been trying to learn how to make american styled dubstep/brostep for about a month and a half... So today I decided I may try to make something for practice...which I now uploaded to soundcloud. I'm looking for tips on how to improve and make something decent.
I have no midi keyboard or anything for that matter.
I used ableton with massive, fm8, and Z3ta.
I did some minor sampling with the drums.
I'm highly confident that this could be considered amateur garbage.
There are many problems with this tune...most notably the volume changes and the lack of any order. Pretty much I just threw a bunch of crap onto a beat.
It's not impressive so Please don't be harsh, this is my first time making anything ever...

Re: My first song attempt
Hi,
Its a decent effort for your first go. Some advice i would give: your mix is a little clumsy, the kick and the sub-bass are fighting for the same frequency space in the mix, so i suggest using EQ's to correct this by taking some low end off of your bass so that the kick punches through abit more. You could also try sidechain compression - look this up on google if youve not heard of it.
As for the arrangment, you can go two ways. You can either choose to copy the formula that your favourite tunes follow (intro, breakdown, drop, breakdown, drop, outro or whatever type of tunes you listen to do...) or you can try and create your own unique arrangements. Since youre begining, i suggest trying to replicate your favourite tunes, and then once youve been practicing, try and create some unique arrangements.
Keep it up. Hope this helps.

You shouldn't release stuff like this. (not saying it's bad) What I mean is; if it's not the best to you, then it's not the best to everyone else. You're your own biggest fan, and your own worst critic. Other people are just critics, looking to be fans. If you can't capture their fandom, then there's only one thing they're gonna be, first impressions are key.
I remember my firs song done. It wasnt like this at all; I'd recommend watching some more tutorials, advanced techniques such as appropriate EQ'ing, side-chaining, filtering, automation etc. if you don't already, And from there go on to develop you're own style... And that could take anywhere from a week to decades. Everyone's different. This sounded very generic in that it's not gonna wow anyone because 198390149 other people have done it. It's good fun, practice and a good place to start. But I'd suggest trying to make you're own style,(if you wanna move forward) get abit more equipped in Ableton. Look up some free VST's (There's a tonne. I recommend this for dubstep http://www.vst4free.com/free_vst.php?id=1224)
So yeah, good attempt, keep at it and take note!

Re: My first song attempt
Hey everyone's gota start somewhere right. sounds a whole lot better then my first attempt. Definitely work on your transitions. Try to find some rise ups for build ups and maybe some breakbeats to fit in between sections. I'm not completely experienced either so I know how it is. Look up some tutorials on compression and eqing that will help a lot. Tutorials on song layouts helped me too. Also work on trying to find your own style.. this will come with more time messing around but it is really important you don't just sound like everyone else. Don't give up you only get better and eventually it gets addicting. Good luck brotha and keep it up.
Re: My first song attempt
interesting use of sounds. i think it was a good effort but you got some stuff to learn, go watch some videos on production
and get comfortable with the things you are using (synths + other plug ins)
