Re: you may be wasting your time
This genre is over 10 years old, by this point. It has gone from underground music, where people were just making tunes for a very small group of people who were also making tunes of the same sort of feel, to mainstream co-opting capitalization in furtherance of the rise of the antichrist. People worrying about constructing their image are constructing the image of the beast, the destroyer of what is good. That is the way of this world, and why people are cynical.

i dunno though
if we are talking about pushing the ego/image of the person who makes the music than i agree
but i do like to look at a nice artwork for an album, a nice video or even "just" a nice font for the artists name

What happened to the dubstep
Nothing happened to the dubstep... I still learn a lot from this forum each time I visit. Someone posts one thread about working on image and everybody freaks out because somebody has different goals in music making than they do... and suddenly now dubstep is dead or something. I guess in the good old days no one cared about image right, they just made good tunes? Am I supposed to believe that capitalism is a new phenomenon that only started affecting dubstep producers in the last 5 years?
But hell I don't know shit, I'm 23 and I've never owned a single piece of analog processing equipment and only touched a real moog once in my life. I've downloaded thousands of samples but I've never once dug through a crate. Maybe when I grow up I can gain the experience to be a cynic like everyone else seems to be.

I hate the word 'gimmick'. Are you saying that the entire reason he's put so much thought into his aesthetic and music is to get plays/attention? The aesthetic and 'image' are simply an extension of the music, like an album cover or a music video. The image is furthering whatever the artist is trying to convey with their music. From what i've read, a lot of people on this thread seem to be under the impression that having an image is simply a form of advertisement. I believe that the image is an important part of the writing process of the music. If you start with an image and let your music form into that image, then you'll have a fully fledged 'complete' project, not just 'a couple nice tunes on an album'.wub wrote: In his case, it's a gimmick. Not the entire reason, but it's definitely a contributing factor IMO.ddnnqq wrote:I hate the word 'gimmick'. I'd disagree.ddnnqq wrote:The aesthetic and 'image' are simply an extension of the music, like an album cover or a music video. Image and style are different things. If a producer has a style, then naturally their music will form into that style and will define itself over time. But the idea of having an image is something that I'd associate with someone putting time into what they look like and how they appear to others. Basically something that unnecessarily takes precedence over their music.

Human life is truly a short affair. It is better to live doing the things that you like. It is foolish to live within this dream of a world seeing unpleasantness and doing only things that you do not like. But it is important never to tell this to young people as it is something that would be harmful if incorrectly understood.
