To be or not to be Dubstep?

Post by CyberSDF » Mon Sep 22, 2014 9:08 am

Hello all,

I'm wondering what is Dubstep and what is not. I've a real issue to tag my tracks, because i love so many things and style in music and i use them in my productions.

For example, this track is a melt of, i think, Dubstep and Electro Lounge, but i'm not sure that i can tag it as Dubstep
Soundcloud

In this one, i use many elements that you'll find in Dubstep tracks, so i tagged it as Dubstep but the final result is far of what i listen in "pure" Dubstep tracks.

Same for those two ones :

Are they Dubstep or not?

Your advice and counsel will be invaluable to me.

PS : I only produce free and libre music (under creative commons BY). Sharing what i do and making sounds reusable by others is my motivation.

There is no such thing as pure dubstep, its just a label to sum up a particular sound/scene which had many influences and styles and that crossed over naturally into other genres (grime/garage/breakstep/ukfunky etc)

But no those tracks are not generally what i would consider dubstep. They sound like electro house to me.

Like i've said, i make tracks that can be reusables. So, tagging is important to help people to find the right material that they need.

Thank you. Your response makes me consider to remove the tag Dubstep on this tracks. I don't want to mislead people.

I consider anything that has a BPM of 105 or 140, dubstep. But that's just my opinion.

Imo, 140 is purely a result of sloppy DJing.

105bpm in 3/4 with the kick on beat 1.5(?) I believe is the same as 140bpm in 3/4 with kick on 1 snare on 3.

May or may not have completely made up the math there... :6:

Snare on 1.5, sounds about right though.

Instead of calling it beat 1.5 you could say "the kick on the 'and' of '1'.." or for an even easier way of deciphering it, go by 6/8 time instead of 3/4 time [essentially the exact same except that theres 6 beats per measure and the beat falls on the 1/8 notes] and say the kick falls on the 3 [instead of "beat 1.5" in 3/4 time].. I know some ppl hate using correct terminology but theory is a universal language. If all of us musicians could speak it we could communicate a lot easier know what im saying.

Or could just say halfstep.

I do, did really. I'd say about half of the tracks I've made since 2012 were in 6/4.
