What monitors do you use when producing?
Unfortunately I've known nothing other than producing with slightly above average IEM's/headphones and shit speakers. I'm saving up for some rokit G3's. Do you use a range of playback devices when producing (not mastering etc.), and how essential are they?

Honestly bro I got rokit 8s and i love em. But its taken me a year or more to learn how to mix well on em. They arent exactly a flat response speaker, which is in my opinion what you should look for

I got Yamaha NS-20Ms ready for hooking up when my DAC finally gets here. If you want good monitors at good prices buy second hand imo.
Also, if you're seriously in to it, buy passive speakers with a separate amp so you can upgrade over time. I can also use my amp to play my bass because I can connect direct to the power amp by bypassing the pre.

I think everyone bought Equators after Distance rated them

Didn't even know Distance rated them...when did that happen? They've been around for quite a while.test_recordings wrote:I think everyone bought Equators after Distance rated them
@OP: At the price point of 400 a pair in the US I'd say you won't find as detailed and accurate a pair of active monitors for the same money anywhere else. Honestly, they make KRK Rokits sound like middle of the road hifi speakers.

For 400 quid though, can't get much better. They're higher mid-end monitors for standard mid range price.

Yea. Nothing in the price range even touches them from all the monitors I've listened to or worked on. Though the PreSonus Eris series is interesting, I still don't think they sound as detailed. Your only issue is going to be lack of low end response, but honestly...how many people here are treating their rooms anyway? I was way better off with smaller speakers in my untreated room after I switched from the Rokit 6's to D5's.legend4ry wrote:For 400 quid though, can't get much better. Equator D series or spend more money IMO.

I usually use a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-M50s to produce and mix on. I occasionally test my mixes on a pair of Pioneer SDJ-05s (bedroom studio) but I'm mostly on the headphones...
