I had a ting up about looking to score a Mid-tempo label which I ended up hearing back from Monst3rcat about, which I then took down from here exited to have finally heard back from a "major" label (lol not quite still).

So as it would turn out (or up) they had also picked up Haywire at the exact same time and because shortly after that he ended up winning some click wank remix contest they decided to sit on our tune until now telling us the sound was too similar and they were really trying to push him since he was "hot right now". Our release never happened and we got edm-bonered heavily then got our tune back because they never released it by the black out date.

This led me and friends to say fuck it and go the route of disinter-mediation. We started a project called Aphelion Imprint, a label dedicated to exploring underground electronic music. We put up our old tunes (some of them rehashed from an old label we contributed to which ended up shutting down because ...trap) and new releases (some future garage and mid-tempo).

It's been a somewhat momentous few months but we ended up being approved for Beatport/Juno/iTunes distribution (and a bunch of other stores as well). Our next release coming up in November is some serious dark Future Garage tip out of Germany with exclusive remixes by Ghostek, Irrelevant, Bimbotronic and a couple other Russian cats. My next personal release scheduled for December will also feature some pretty heavyweight 117/dnb remixes by Gremlinz and Loxy as well as Ghostek again.

So I'm posting this right now to extend a formal invitation to all ninjas who want to get released with post-dubstep/tribal sub/future garage/dnb vibes who may be tired of not really even getting a listen from labels after sinking in 3 weeks on a tune and paying for a mix-down. I also want to share some solid free DL's with you guys as well.

Let me know what you guys think, post up your tunes too!

Were locking down a distro for 300 presses/limited edition stuff in europe/UK.. Second release of 2015 will hit the shelves. Future garage/DNB remix format should be viable with a big name. Theres no point in pressing vynil for anything in north america. Literally less point then whatever white chicks cant evn over right now.

why are you doing all this if the cash is bad? Are you sure proceeding with such large expenditure is wise?
What kind of a presence do you guys have in the UK atm?
Tbh, if I were you and were looking to press underground electronic music I'd stick to a smaller operation, smaller only in the sense that your interactions with the market ought to be a little more direct. It's also quite feasible to press vinyl in the US if you go about it right.

We don't really have any visibility in the UK right now, but that will get better, and then well, 300 copies is as small as it gets. Also..there's just no market for dark Future Garage or non jump-up dnb in Canada or the US...iirc Feed Me. Theres 7 million people in Toronto and we can't get 20 people out to a Gremlinz jam meanwhile he's on every single prestige Drum & Bass label known to mankind multiple times. We're nobodies, literally, yet we're played on regular rotation on DI.fm which has a strong presence in Europe the UK and Russia, and google analytics and Soundcloud stats confirm where our plays come from.

To press 300 copies and distribute is around 1500$ CAD, that allows you to sell your work everywhere where people actually like the styles of music we make along side an established name to catch looks at around 10-12$ CAD a piece and still almost double our money. That's very competitive, and even if you sell less than 30-40% of the units, you still got more publicity then spending the equivalent of the lost money on a facebook campaign targeting UK underground music heds since, facebook/social media adverts are mostly jank, and most people who like underground music use adblocker and never see relevant adverts to your music. 1500$ for me isn't much, I have a pretty good job now and i can afford to take that hit 3-4 times a year without my family asking questions.. The exposure for me and my friends who are much more broke than me is more relevant then trying to profit from music, right now. Trust me my entire life here after hours is an edm suck hole where people rate Dvbbs and snort K and I've no desire to be that perennial opening DJ that sucks dick for main room bs slots or even browall garbage.

nice read, thanks. I like the dnb tune...
but seriously, 20 people for Gremlinz? I wouldn't necessarily book him since he has an incredibly low profile still, but you must surely be able to get more than 20 people in a club, regardless of who's playing? (cue "early fwd" tales) don't you have friends who owe you one?

all the best for your label!

eh. same as blocks & escher, I guess. everyone knows them, but nobody really feels the need to go see them. a bit like what happened to Loxy & Resound; they're a nice addition to a line-up, but not headliner material anymore (in terms of popularity). I'd say people like DLR, Cern, Amoss, Stray, Emperor make good and (more or less) affordable headliners, since they're quite popular with the heads but may appeal to some kids aswell.

it's a different story for non-european markets entirely, I agree, since flights are incredibly expensive and all.

compared to more obvious "headliner" choices like Om Unit, Dub Phizix, Icicle etc. that is of course.

Don't get me wrong, we can move 3-4000 people for the Koolhaus (Guverment complex) for Andy C, but I've been to 1-200 person jams for Black Sun Empire, Loxy, Mefjus, Misanthrop and even Marcus Intalex. Keep in mind the jams were mental, great vibe. I stand for big names in small places when i want to have fun but yea, that's what we have to deal with. Toronto's once vibrant scene died out heavily around 2006-2008 and although its on its way back up now, the kids haven't graduated from all the bubble gum shit and thats why we've got bottomfeed ghost-produced acts like dvbbs filling out 4 venues in one weekend because their shows sell out in 8 minutes on ticketmaster.

(edit: To be fair we still have Soul In Motion crew pullin in 5-600 people for Icicle/A-sides type shit every quarter, they are a big independent crew and they run the only legit live to air drum and bass station in the country out of a downtown uni.)
