^That is pretty much where I started seven years ago man ;p About two to three years ago I decided I didn't want to *always* use a mouse and qwerty keyboard to make music, so I invested in other options and it opened up an entire world for me. You gotta start somewhere.

Who is "everybody"?

What is your budget?

A good pair of headphones won't go unused in *any* studio. So, that is a sound investment IMO. I'm just throwing a number out there, but generally speaking 300 dollars gets you pretty great headphones you won't feel the need to upgrade anytime soon. Where as a 300 dollar pair of monitors basically isn't worth the money unless you just like working on speakers better (I do because of ear fatigue), or maybe if you buy used you could get something decent for 300 dollars. As far as cost to benefit ratio for a beginner on a budget headphones are the way to go.

^ I have a friend who does music production and most of his friends are in to that stuff too, and they always and always ask me to buy monitors not headphones. I don't want to take their advice 'coz I personally like working with headphones 'coz I can hear and look out for errors much clearly

Everybody has their own way, but probably at some point should have both. I can't stand working in headphones. It is punishment for not getting my work done before 10pm.

But yeah, you do need to check, and listen closely, etc.

I think headphones are better when you're working with your track to make small changes and details, and monitors are better when you're almost finish with your track and you'll be just working with the arrangements and build ups. Idk that's how i see it I could be wrong :( :)

You know, on one hand it kind of is because you could make some really odd erronious (?) sounds outside of the hifi's spectrum/ range... that would then come up when listening elsewhere..

but on the other, your tracks sound pretty good as is so there's only a positive side right now... in a way you could just continue and then once in a while look forward to getting some when you have the dough, because they will improve your listening or judging ability.. pretty quickly..

making tune after tune after tune is > anything else and you are already in the middle of doing that !

Hifi sounds too good though. Hifi is not really about fidelity, it is about sweetness.

If you work on good sounding hifi your song will sound like shit.

If you work on shitty flat monitors, your song will sound good.

Ostensibly.

With gear there are two high points with a gnarly valley in between - when you first get something, you come up with all this great shit, exploring the device, doing things wrong, finding one feature and really exploiting it, because you don't really know how to use other features, all that stuff... then when you've got the thing figured out, you enter the valley. Nothing comes here. The gear is just a musical instrument at this point, or a processor. It is just an expression of you. But after a long long time producing shit with the thing, you get to the point where you've mastered it, and it is like sex, you and the gear vibeing, making babies. IMO.

Re syro, I've hardly got the kit list, but I do have a closet. I have a core signal path, and then a patch bay that lets me get modular, and just bring in other devices. I agree re keep changing things up in the studio, for whatever reason, I just get bored of working with the same gear in the same configuration after a while. There is nothing wrong with it, but, I don't know, you spend so much time using the same thing, staring at the same thing, you just want something different. I am down with that.

This article could be posted in the thinking out loud thread :)

No doubt.

I thought it might serve as some form of standard, or at least as a notion that even Aphex isn't really sure what to buy either.

yeah, I mean he gets that output despite not having an idea of what he wants (or having an idea that everything could be used ofcourse)..

I find it somewhat freeing that there isn't that much of a preference..
