Huge Zomboy, xKore, Skrillex basses

Post by jordycash777 » Thu Oct 16, 2014 7:18 am

For years now I have been trying to find a way to make my basses sound as big as the likes of skrillex and zomboy and haven't had much luck. I already know about stereo imaging and that has helped some but even still my basses don't even compete with the pros. Ive looked everywhere trying to find good info on this but i can't find anything.

There's some really good tips for this kind of thing in the Growl Bass thread.

mostly skrillex uses fm8 for growls even the "operator" in Ableton. Modern talking in massive can do a pretty nice growls too, but it's kinda over used now actually imo

Holy mother of....I had to triple check that reply date because people have been saying this for years. You are joking right? Maybe his first few tracks he did but no...that doesn't happen these days.

Zomboy seems to just reproduce simplified Massive versions of Skrillex's crazy FM creations. Despite his lack of originallity, he is a damn good producer so it is legit to try to reproduce his sound.

Umm....tbh no one can anser that because if they know how...they will be famous and not have any time to be on forums to give away their secrets. It is a combo of amazing sound design and good mixing skillz.

Actually they can recreate most of skrillex's signature sounds now a days. I'm pretty sure that's one of the reasons why skrillex is changing his style and if ever not, today's dubstep has a lot of growls and all that skrillex-ish sound. It's starting to annoy me coz they all ended up sounding the same

Have you tried using some light saturation on them and sometimes even reverb helps if you're trying to go for a big sound.

Running a growl in massive through ohmicide really increases the fullness and crunchiness of it. It also brings out frequencies you wouldn't otherwise hear. I definitely recommend getting it.

Skrillex definatley used FM8, I remember reading about him in an interview explaining how "All these kids are trying to recreate my sounds in Massive, when I did it in FM8".
Or something like that

You can probably reproduce a lot of FM sounds in Massive, it just won't come as easy. I've never used FM8 but I'm sure logic comes with an in-built one, obviously won't be the same but might be worth messing around with if you have it.

You can get hold of a tonne of free patches online for massive though, just search "skrillex free patch" in youtube or something.

This is a good video for reproducing the kind of leads they all seem to sample from eachother:

Start off simple; limit yourself to use only 2-3 operators. There's million examples of people making growls using only 2-3 oscillators and without any fm synthesis. Just because you have 1000000000 knobs doesn't mean you need to mess with them all.

Also about the actual growls: I'm not on FM8, but in general, usually modulating low pitched wave with higher pitched wave or vice versa, works better than modulating low pitched wave with another low pitched wave or high pitched wave with another high pitched wave.

If you want to understand FM8, you need to understand FM synthesis. It works alot differently than other synths that you're probably used to using (i.e, Massive) because they're subtractive. FM8 works in a totally different way. There's loads of articles online explaining it.

But basically it uses one wave to modulate another (carrier and modulator) and this results in new waves being formed

something like that anyway...
