breakbeat science is your best bet. their website is down at the moment but you can look them up in the phonebook. it is cheaper, dont know where you are looking. try turntablelab.com

breakbeat science is gone, sad to say. kim's on st. marks is the only place that carries dubstep-- if you're coming from the UK it's gonna be quite a letdown.

for used gear, peep rogue music on 30th st. (www.roguemusic.com has a pretty decent list of what's in the store). 48th st. has sam ash and manny's (which is owned by sam ash), guitar center is on 14th as well as in queens and brooklyn, and main drag music-- some funky finds-- is in williamsburg, BK.

Turntable lab is one of the great east village record shops-- not a huge collection but almost everything there is fun and will get people dancing (not dubstep, though-- lotta 120bpm, super-hype baltimore/hiphop/dancehall/soul/dj stuff). they also sell gear. for more vinyl hunting in the east village, there's a-1 records on 7th (8th? 6th? around there), satellite records on the bowery for house and techno (and dj gear), and a bunch of house shops-- dance tracks, that one on 11th who's name i forget, etc, etc.

but yeah-- if you're coming in search of dubstep records, you'll have a bit of a letdown. stuff you may have slept on, though, will be at kims-- always at least a few DMZ plates there.

Mondo Kim's Busted for Bootlegs
by Nick Sylvester
June 10th, 2005 2:56 PM

At 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8, patrolmen of the New York Police Department's 9th Precinct executed a search warrant for Mondo Kim's music and video store, located at 6 St. Marks Place. The flagship store for the Kim's Video chain, Mondo Kim's is one of the city's largest independent music retailers. "Five Hundred CD-Rs, Twenty-Seven Music DVDs, Nine DVD burners, and a scanner were among the items seized"

the storefront that was in the back of the men's clothing shop closed up, was in satellite records for a minute, and then stopped in late august. The whole business has moved to chicago; haven't heard a thing about them reopening a storefront in NYC.
