dont want to be unnecessarily argumentative, and it is off topic, but I think jungle runs deeply throughout 2step, amens or not...

agree with you Shonky that techno has been a bigger influence since the start than might be generally recognised... Artwork is the other obvious example

still need to send you those tunes i promised damnit i keep forgetting, and now my laptop is fucked. sorry man

There is a flying lotus interview in this months Wire where he talks about being influenced by Skream and Kode9 sets at Sonar.

Are you talking about the Reset EP to be Dubstep influenced? If so I agree, 'Tea Leef Dancers' is sick.

Big up for the mention Boom!

I think that after a brief period of some stagnation a myraid of influences are coming into dubstep and being exported out of it. Producers are bringing their influences to the table and it is creating some exciting diversity....

Boxcutter is a fantastic example with a unique sound and lots of influences. He also experiments with BPMs and i think this is where thins get interesting. 140 is a great tempo but over the course of an album it can feel everything is staying in the same gear, less so in a set where you are building a tapestry of sound but tempo changes add to the overall effect of an album.....Take Skepta's album, hip hop to dnb tempo across it.

Myself I've been working between 130-150 bpm you can still create space at faster tempos and there is lots of room for rhythm at 130...helps give variety to your work...Oyaarss is another great example, he goes SLOW but builds incredible pieces.

I've been hearing for a long time now different stands of dubstep, compare an Urban Graffiti set to a Hatcha set and you would think you were listening to different genres but there is a genuine unity when it comes to dubstep as a whole and this can only be healthy as it gives the casual listener a path into sonic pastures new rather than getting stuck with a dubby or halfstep sound.

For me it's great to see producers I respect and ones who actually got me listening to breakbeat influenced music creating the genre i've been into for the last 6 years. People like Breakage and Infiltra creating dubstep influenced sounds excites me....and with new labels like Rottun (hard step), Creative Space (electronica) and Kursed (whatever!) springing up it is signalling a new creative burst with the genre and giving new artists and sounds time and space to prosper!

Isn't that Horsepower "Gorgon Sound" or is dubstep recycling itself already?

broken beat is amazing just not enough good stuff being made (equal to my own personal feelings on dubstep atm, but thats another story)

also alot of stuff being called broken beat doesnt sound like broken beat lol, just like latin house really.

well that started to happen hasn't it. There is a missive similarity between the two.

Anyway. I've always looked at the term 'dubstep' to basiclly mean new music. It has always been a general term to me. It just short hand for 'new electronic music'

i wouldn't say much more of lotus' shit is dubstep influenced though, seems to be way more dilla/madlib inspired than anything else.

i think some of his new stuff is going to be a little more in that direction, but 1983 sounds nothing like dubstep, the reset ep hardly does either - its just that one tune does seem to have dubstep to thank for the influence
