You put verb on your master? nuts. I've never even considered trying that.

An ME put verb on an EP I did. Almost every track was recorded on different gear, in a different place and that verb (along with other magic) made all the different tracks come together and almost sound like they were in the same space. Not quite perfect, but a bloody good job nonetheless. :)

Pure Bollocks,
Life really is too short to break down all that is wrong with this piece.

I'm no mastering expert, but as a professional audio engineer and on first glance i must agree that this 'tutorial' looks a bit pooey to be honest...

Hehe you disapprove all links posted here, can you provide us with relevant information that'd make your job easier - in addition to what you said that's quoted in the bible's mastering paragraph?

Seems like that tutorial goes a bit too much by the numbers.

So Jason, how much would a pro masterer go by the numbers?

Generally mastering your own tracks is like cutting your own hair,You rarely get good results. This is because mastering is about a second opinion just to make sure that the music is in context for the end format and that there are not any tonal problems.
Mastering is not just about making the music loud.
I suggest that people try and get the acoustics of their studios as good as possible.
Make sure that your mixes translate well on other systems(boombox/Car).
If you plan to send your tracks to be mastered by a pro then do not
normalise the stereo bus
Limit the stereo bus
Heavily compress the stereo buss
Red light any of the channels in the computer.

Send the Mastering engineer a dynamic mix, If you want your music to be loud then ask the me to make it loud.
Seems like that tutorial goes a bit too much by the numbers.

So Jason, how much would a pro masterer go by the numbers?
I can only speak for myself on this one I do not go by numbers ,Whilst a spectrum analyser would be useful on the problematic jobs ,I have never used one.

The secret to mastering is there is no secret.
Just hard work and years studying your craft.
Jason

I only cut own hair.

Just not the stuff on my head.

Yes, that's right.

No nose hair for me.

back on topic

Yeah the second opinion thing is uber important. I've put out a few tunes that I thought were mixed down pretty well only to see them interpreted in a different way (ie in a mix), and then I realized the levels were way the fuck off.
