I've modded and admin'd on several forums before. And we kept spam at bay very easily

The basic run down we used without having to upgrade the entire board to a different system:
1. New users can't post a thread at all until a certain amount of posts made (and we'd ban if they were spamming to reach that number)
2. A cap on how many threads a user can make in a given time (this should be a given on any forum, what normal user is going to post 10+ threads in 30 minutes, let alone a day?)
3. Captcha + question related to forum for sign up
4. A mod has to allow new registration requests, not just automated, this allows the mod to check against blacklisted IP addresses and prevents Jesslem from making new accounts
4. When we were overun at times, we got more moderators

yeah exactly

there's real people behind them, so they're incredibly hard to block, but we're working on a new system to sort the problem out

i understand that it is frustrating but we're clearly a big target, and it's not easy to stop determined spammers without turning off registration entirely
