Sub/drums etc bass range monitoring

Post by test_recordings » Wed Jan 07, 2015 4:57 am

I can't analyse proper track frequencies with my DAW but is playing down to C1 (32.703Hz apparently: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C_%28musical_note%29) really necessary? My speakers are two NS-20Ms and have the same bass range as the NS-10M. I just want to replicate the floor hugging bass of DMZ etc but it's hard to hear without headphones (of which I have a basic monitoring set), or a sub (which I don't want to buy extra).

I feel like to get floor hugging bass you need a sub. Its all about moving air...yer headphones...yer monitors...they ain't gonna do it. Even the most honest monitor manufacturers...I don't trust their specs on "how low they go". Sorry man :/ feeling your pain with 5 inch Equator's here...

Well mine only go to 50Hz properly like the NS-10Ms, can get higher than them because I have an extra 'super tweeter' but the same bass range. I read the Optical Reddit thread in the SNH and he used to go on analogue for production so bass was 60Hz+ because of the limitations but it's a different medium I suppose. I've heard from other people on here using NS-10Ms that they're generally all good so I'll just have faith...

Kind of crazy though, when I hit low notes on D1ish the room shakes a little, but C1 is just perceivable1!

Yea what you can hear/feel versus what you can't when you get down that low doesn't make any sense to me  It'd be interesting to know what the actual, practical frequency response of one's monitors are versus what they are rated at. I always assume that if they say they go down to 50hz, its more like 60hz.

Mm I think mine actually go to 50Hz. Don't forget, I'm playing stuff from 32Hz up so I'm not surprised it's hardly perceptible if it's just a sine wave. I can just perceive it through harmonics...

I highly doubt they even reach 50 judging by the ns10s I've heard. Amazing speakers tho
