You lads wanna help me think about my midi setup? If I posted up some diagrams or something? I'm still doing physical space stuff here, but am going to be actually setting up the gear pretty soon. I've postponed really thinking about the midi setup cause... it's a drag.

FWIW I just switched from dealing with a thru box and using thrus on the few pieces of gear I have to try and get shit sorted. Was a real pain in the ass trying to work it that way.

I think one of my big challenges is going to be flexibility. I want to be able to work with my daw as the brain, and also with computer off, and maybe the mc 909 as master brain, and at least sending out tempo and start and stop transport. Which I'm not even sure it can do, I just really want it to be able to do that.

Yea. I wanted something flexible too. The MIDI Express XT has 8 factory presets with front panel access as well as 8 user presets with front panel access you setup with their software. It can run w/o the computer and you can switch between routings at the flick of a switch. I think most MIDI patchbays should send sync clock and start stop transport. When using my thru box one thing all my devices always responded to were those two things.

Unitor by emagic is the same way. Can't remember what the dealio was though with the setup software, to create routings that are then available offline. Maybe I couldn't install it?

I do have an old 98 machine that did use the unitor, had the software installed... maybe I can get that running, haven't booted in 10+ years..., but maybe I can setup the routings, then bring the unitor over to my xp machine, I think the drivers worked well enough to be used as a midi interface, then offline, I can rely on the 98 created routings... Anyone ever boot up a 10+ year sitting old computer? Data still going to be on that hard drive? God, 98 didn't use a pw login did they?

Nice. Thanks for the update. Sounds amazing in theory. I'm not positive, but I thought I heard it won't have any 5 pin MIDI Din which would be a huge vibe killer for me.

Fair point. If its that tiny it won't be very usable to me. Like the Volca Keys...I find it hard to jam on it...I trip over those tiny controls...

Seriously, the one I have worked great with XP, but just functions with Windows 7. The software doesn't work properly, but the hardware is still working.

One of the reasons I'm still running xp on my main production machine. Just got win 7 for that machine, haven't installed... I've got a lot to think about.

I much prefer Win 7 to XP but my midi box was one of the things that was affected by the upgrade. It still works, I just can't use the software anymore to do complex midi patching, but in actuality, it has never been a problem. I can do most of that with my DAW.

I will give you advice if you need. I'm used to fairly complex midi setups. At the moment I have about 12 devices that are on 5 pin midi din using an 8x8 midi interface. So some of those devices are using a thru. Just make sure to use thru's on devices that aren't multitimbral and give them their own midi channel.
