I'd say learn how to EQ with whatever one you like using. FL Studio's Parametric EQ 2 is what I use. I have a Waves EQ but I don't like it as much as the fl studio one.

I don't use any external stuff, I'm not good enough to use it properly lol. But EQ, Reverb, Delay, Panning, and Gain Staging are the best things to know.

i would definitely recommend a plug for each human orifice as 3za had offered up.

Just make sure you don't mix up the ass and mouth plugs unless your looking for that ATM effect used by many producers today.

Master the plugins in your DAW when you feel comfy about the plugins and what it does get something more advanced. Try to go slowly i went through phase with such a huge amount of plugins that i loose my creativity and patience choosing between them and not really knowing how to use them.

Go to splice.com and click on the plugins tab, you it will show you what the most used plugins are by the users of the site, most if not all are producers so it's a great list to start with once you know what plugins you need to supplement your stock plugins.

If I was to make a list though.

Massive, because the way it's laid out it just perfect to learn sound design on, added with it's great sound and immense popularity, it's the top of the list for basically anyone.

With Massive you have a lot of bases covered synth wise, but it's FM game is kind of weak, so I'd say the second thing you'd want is an Frequency Modulation synth like FM8 or my personal favorite Sytrus. Modulate one operator with another pitched 5 octaves and uses it as a carrier for a vocoder to modulate a vocal line to create complex, massive growls and such, or just use the complex waves that are created through FM for more analog sounds, like drum hits or plucks, if you're looking to make brostep styled stuff, I'd actually say having a decent FM synth is more important then a decent subtractive.

Sausage Fattener, it does what it says it does and it does it fast and simple, with three knobs it's one of the easiest tools to learn and has quickly become my go to for aggressive limiting/compression and even sometimes as a distortion (I just send a small band of sound in the desired frequency to it from a track and mix it back with the rest after)

Think massive is a great suggestion. One of the easiest to learn/use/understand. There are a lot of bells and whistles. But you can very successfully treat it as a two osc subtractive. Which I would suggest.

Fm8 requires serious synthesis knowledge.

My only problem with Massive is that it just doesn't sound that good. Its like the opposite of Absynth--which has always generally sounded cold/brittle to me in a good way. Massive sounds cold and brittle in a bad way.

I'm not dooming anyone to anything, I'm simply suggesting the most used and versatile tools. I've used all those tools on ambient projects, or mixing a punk or metal song as well as creating brostep.

A large group seem to have a problem with this plugin, but at the same time there's plenty of people making quality 'coons with this thing. That's why I actually gave it a chance, I'm so happy I did, it's quickly becoming my favorite brickwall/maximizer/distortion/compressor. Go give it an actual collage try before you just toss it out like yesterdays jam.

sausage fattener is different and actually the bomb

its not a soundgoodizer or similar

it has a threshold going in and colouring, which is the key to it's functions.

it kind of limits but only the lowend, or.. in other words.. it will break easily in the hi end and become artifact-ey - which means you tend to apply it quite mildly.. but at the same time that is its' biggest strenght - tiny amounts of colouring..
