Pulsedream3 wrote:Haha I hate festivals and I'm not a huge fan of this EDM craze, but it definitely is an American thing to make your stage show look crazier than it actually is. That being said, I'm playing some shows coming up that really require me to have some kind of show. I may make complex music at home (and that in itself is much more complicated than any live band could know), but people are still disappointed and very dismissive if you sit up there with your desktop Mac (the only computer I own right now) and a push
What is the context of the show that they would be disappointed and dismissive about you performing that way? At least in my local scene people don't get their panties in a bunch over what the DJ is doing so much. Electronic music is kinda weird in that isn't really easy to perform. I think I was reading an interview with Ulrich Schnauss in which he talked about the origin of his live show was pressure from a label to tour and he felt like he had to figure out a way to perform the music live even though it wasn't really created that way.

Dunno what to tell you dude. That's a tough situation.

Just playing with some acts that don't use a laptop on stage for their performances. Noise techno artists. So I'm gonna feel out of place if I bring my desktop on stage and hit go. My best bet seems to be messing around with the fx on ableton with my push. I'll add the korg just for something extra even though i don't necessarily need it.

So the crowd is a bit pretentious, eh? Cool you are playing out though. Maybe you can improvise some sounds on the MS20 or something. Hope it goes well man. I'll try to take a listen to your soundcloud sometime soon.

Haha idk if pretentious is the right word because I think some of these guys got their start just playing their music off an iPod and screaming into a mic. But at the same time it's kind of a big night with some bigger acts so I'd like to impress them (as stupid as that sounds). Honestly they probably don't give a shit how one plays their tracks, I'm a anxiety ridden lad lol

There are some interesting scripts about that provide a lot more functionality or complete makeovers for the ableton button controllers, that could give you a lot more versatility control in your set. Pulling out processed sounds and drums and making kits also more control, trigger with push in step sequencer mode as layers or main (if has that, native or script). Build a big macro/chain that you can feed sounds into for texture/continuity. Dpends how much time you want/ha ve to put in, and wherther you want to play tracks or a mash of elements.

Just for the sake of discussion. In your opinion is triggering pre made sequences on hardware and tweaking parameters or FX a live set?

Can you tell us what an ideal set consists of?

Yea. That is pretty lame...just elektron boxes on playback. I had a monomachine for a while...you *could* do something interesting live...but it could be really lame too considering you could record complex automation and fake doing cool shit live.

^on one level I can't help but be impressed with anyone who can keep track of that much gear in a live setting.

Wish I had that amount of gear to work with haha. What would you suggest someone do for the live show if they only have a few analog synths, a computer (ableton), and a push?

Pretty sure all he's doing is triggering and deactivating clips
