garethom wrote:Not that I necessarily think it's the best, but Birmingham (and surrounding areas) has had some big ass influential scenes in it's time: Brum Beat (and the later success of Steve Winwood), Nick Drake, ELO (and members like Roy Wood and Jeff Lynn), the birthplace of heavy metal and the death/industrial stuff like Napalm Death, Godflesh, Scorn, etc., massive involvement in ska and reggae, loads of the new wave/new romantic stuff in the 80s, people like Lee Fisher pushing Acid House, all the House Of God Birmingham sound type stuff like Surgeon, Regis and that lot. Goldie and Kemistry both being from Birmingham or the surrounding area. Big involvement in bassline. All this Jackin House shit that's going on now. All this stuff they're calling "B-Town" or whatever.

Big up Birmz, had its fingers in a lot of musical pies.

Before your post, I hadn't heard of electro swing, so I quickly checked some out on youtube. Now I can say there are two genres I've heard of that I don't like a single tune from so far.

you must have proper shit music taste-Oasis' debut album is widely regarded as one of the best ever in "top 100" lists- Stone Roses epitomised their era and their comeback was widely recieved-as was/did James'-The Smiths-need I say more? I urge you to listen to more New Order. I think you're dismissing bona fide good bands and naming one "great" band.

Oasis' success speaks for itself but (purely subjectively ofc) I think they're brilliant

Oasis and Stone Roses are regarded highly in the mainstream bullshit music press aimed at idiots who like middle of the road nonsense. Large sales don't mean fuck all. Oasis just churned out bland Beatles rip off tracks combined with some of the sound of general 90s British music with lyrics about being an everyday boring tnuc in the 90s. They appeal to mouth breathing Carling drinkers.

New Order basically were what happened when you take a collapsed Joy Division and get them to reform writing boring pop music with none of the dark atmosphere or post punk edge that Joy Division had

The Smiths wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for Morrisey singing exactly the same thing over every track complete with corny as fuck lyrics. Add in then that he's probably one of the most annoying people in music as a person and it makes it even more difficult to like his tuneless warbling.
