Trollphace/Skrillex Bass

Post by Tupello »

Not sure if this has already been answered, but Trollphace's new basses are absolutely sick, the attack and dirt from them is just :W: :W: :W: :W:

Anyone got any idea how he gets the attack and just the general sound? I know the right direction is phase and such, but any idea on how to get it closer? Possibly the signal chain?

Interesting, Melodyne could contribute.

I talked to Labco yesterday and he said it was a lot to do with the fact Trollphace uses Reason these days, but at the same time, Trollphace posted a video on his FB of him on Logic 9.
I Don't know what to believe anymore! :(

Trollphace uses Reason for his wonky shit (like the remix you posted), and Logic for his Tearout stuff. He's stated that in a Google Hangout before.

Thus, he probably made the basses for the Yogi remix in Reason. To which, I can't help you, but just thought you should know.

Trollphace uses also fl studio (really) so maybe could be the newtone that is just great for formant switching just in the tail of that small phased hits...try yourself using a phased formant square whit a bit of release.Reccord it put it in newtone cut the tail and formant up or down.drag the sample in the pattern create the "melody" record it again and add short reverb with a bit of pre delay + OTT to bring it up.
if nedded high pass it and add the sub

Could you explain what you mean by phase? How would I apply that? Having like 3 voices in Massive and turning the pitch cutoff up a bit?

apply the phase just to one osc...i mean the modulation osc in the bottom left of massive...go to phase move it to more or less at 90° and hear what sound best using different wavetables and differents filters (i think bandreject and double notch to create the kinda vowel).
you don' t need 3 osc for this type os sound i think

I didn't mean 3 oscillators, I was talking about the voicing tab. For some reason Phase Modulation never occurred to me lol. :cornlol:

Haven't had much luck with Melodyne formant play. I am not sure who's sound is who's but I like both synths a lot. One has a vinyl kind of sweep too it and the other has more of a yaw mouthy character which I guessing is Skrillex's.

The one that kicks in at 00:45 is definitely Skrillex. He's used it a lot in his recent tracks and I've actually already started a thread on it here.

i don't think so honestly because i' ve listen it already an awful lot of time in recent trollphace tracks like in the rebel remix

I've heard the rebel remix and the growl I'm talking about isn't in it. Just the standard Trollphace patch that starts the Burial drop.
List of songs that Skrillex has used the 00:45 growl in:

Ok, check the link again…I updated it with a closer patch. I will work on vid tutorial tonight. It sounds like the 3rd sweep is just a slight modulation change on the same patch and I can't get the patch to do it so I don't think this is the right way to get this sound but hey…kind of close.
