Jazzy Dubstep (Chord Marauders, Geode, Jafu et al)

Anyone had much success with this sort of sound?

I'm not really sure how to approach it - is it mostly sample based or do you think these guys are just MIDI wizards?

I said this in another thread that had a similar question, so I will quote the response I put in that thread on here. I make this sound, so there are many different ways of doing it, I listed several different methods in this response. I myself use a little bit of both methods, it depends on the track.

Alright, well considering I make that jazzy vibe, and I talk to Trashbat, B9, Jafu, Freud, etc. on a regular basis I can give you the rundown on how we make this sound. There are 2 main methods that we use to get this sound.

For artists like Geode, and Cal (Trashbat), they use several different piano sounds to accomplish this sound. A VST I have found that recreates this is Lounge Lizard, but really any VST with Electronic Pianos will work (Logic has some good e-piano presets). Geode tends to make more of a Jazzy, Deep House style. So stabs and short melodies are the way to go.

For artists like myself, B9, and Freud, we use sampling to accomplish this sound. Our sound is a bit more jazzy, and less garagey. Sampling jazz piano riffs, or any real piano riff in general will accomplish this sound.

Simplicity is key to our scene. If you listen to Geode - Embrace, you can hear that the melody is carried throughout the track, but drum variation, vocal one shots, automations in tremelo add variation. When I first started this sound I had no idea where to start. I eventually found my own style and stick with it; but, I hope this helped a little bit. This guy it great.

Get some good quality VSTs & kontakt libraries, learn about articulations. Try and get authenticity using midi. The rest just comes from your own creativity.

There's no creativity in taking a song and adding an 808 under it. There is so much more to sampling than that. That's stealing, not sampling.

Sampling is the art of taking a PORTION of a piece of music and turning it into something completely different. Taking a whole song, and slapping an 808 under it is not innovative, it takes no artistic ability, or creativity to do. That's stealing.

I ain't got nothing against sampling as long as people are not lazy but creative, that means I want to hear sample flipped properly and not just untouched loops with beat over it for the rest of the song.

Of course there can be exceptions as with everything.

Jazz production aesthetics are very 'clean' so it should be easy to sample
