Making music on one speaker

What do you think of strictly making music with one speaker? If you select mono with one speaker is it counterproductive? (lack of better word)

lots of studios usually keep a small single mono monitor setup for translation reference for radio, ipods, etc etc

Wouldn't really see the point in trying to compose or mix on a single speaker though.

A lot of the time when I start a track and im gettin that basic drums/sub loop down ill only have one monitor on Its being too lazy to reach round the desk b2b checking the foundation of the track in mono Cant imagine tryin to mixdown stereo shit without havin both on though

If it's a money issue, just go for it. I started with one speaker while i was saving up for the second one. Between the one studio monitor and my DJ headphones i got by until i had the money for the other one.
