headphone vs monitor question prease
So I'm curious if I should purchase either some a7x's for an untreated room or some headphones for around the same price? I'll eventually have both but I have to wait and save some money. curious what you guys think is the better route for better mix downs until I have both? any recommendations for headphones around 400-700$? thanks homies

Re: headphone vs monitor question prease
sad but true, headphones.
Save up buy some treatment then throw in that pair of monitors.
Buy some sennheiser HD 650, you won't regret it.
You will need a good soundcard to drive em.

+1 on either the 650's or the 600's. For an untreated room will take you far!Hashkey wrote:sad but true, headphones.

Re: headphone vs monitor question prease
Are you guys fking retarded? Headphones over a pair of Adam monitors ? I don't care if you are producing in a tiled bathroom....get the monitors. It is the right thing to do.
Re: headphone vs monitor question prease
Even just buying some treatment, whatever that means exactly, won't be enough
to properly monitor on loudspeakers in most bedrooms. The room makes
all the difference. In my room for example, I have about 30% less low freq response
at listening position compared to a mere two feet back. Putting foam on your walls
is not going to address these kinds of standing waves. The lower the problem frequencies are,
the more it's going to cost to tackle them.
I went the headphones route personally. You could go with the speakers, but go with
small ones. The 7" woofers could work if your room is quite big, but consider the 5".
I personally haven't heard this new line from Adam, ribbon tweeters usually have
a lacking low mid response.
Headphones have their issues too of course. To me the most important once are: you can't feel
bass and the stereo image is not in front of you. However, I've been mixing on my
headphones for some time now and I've been noticing that the tracks translate quite well
to high end monitoring environments.
Maybe ask TMSV about producing tracks on headphones

Re: headphone vs monitor question prease
Go with the headphones first. So you get a clean mix (frequency and dynamic wise). But do all stereo mixing on monitors (If you got a clean mix before, this shouldnt be a too big problem with standard loudspeakers, placed in the right distance. Youßll get a feeling for it.
Re: headphone vs monitor question prease
I would go for the monitors, always have some problems mixing the bass right with headphones.
Re: headphone vs monitor question prease
Yeah if this thread goes for enough pages, some people might convince you
you won't get those problems with monitors..

Agreed.AxeD wrote:Yeah if this thread goes for enough pages, some people might convince you

How can be possible to have problems mixing bass on headphones :O
Re: headphone vs monitor question prease
closed back headphones will accentuate bass, open backs won't have enough etc. etc. it's hard to get it right.Hashkey wrote:Agreed.AxeD wrote:Yeah if this thread goes for enough pages, some people might convince you

Re: headphone vs monitor question prease
Of course but these are silly problems compared to an untreated room with an RT60 of 2.6 seconds on bass frequencies.forbidden wrote:closed back headphones will accentuate bass, open backs won't have enough etc. etc. it's hard to get it right.Hashkey wrote:Agreed.AxeD wrote:Yeah if this thread goes for enough pages, some people might convince you

What, you don't do the bathroom check? Pfff...noobzHashkey wrote:Serious or sarcasm?Banesy wrote:Are you guys fking retarded? Headphones over a pair of Adam monitors ? I don't care if you are producing in a tiled bathroom....get the monitors. It is the right thing to do.
Re: headphone vs monitor question prease
Dude just get the a5's and get some bass traps and maybe a few foam panels instead for same money. The a5's are more than enough. THe 7's are too big for alot of rooms amyway. I just downgraded from krk 8's to adam a5's and they are just as loud and sound SO much better. I would def go that route for same money spent and a much better sounding room. Headphones are great too but they are just not the same imo. Its all preference and all personal perception. Find out what you like. I like both.

Re: headphone vs monitor question prease
either get 5s and deal with the terrible room sound/comb filtering effects/ standing waves (or get someone who kows what they are doing to treat ur room £££££). treating it urself is nearly pointless if u have no idea.
Or get headphones and have no issues once u spend about a month getting used to the sound.
I have monitors and cheap headphones and i have so far mixed on headphones all year so idk.

Re: headphone vs monitor question prease
Decent headphones with a good visual monitoring well go much farther then great monitors in a shitty untreated room.
Re: headphone vs monitor question prease
Very few people with monitors have a properly treated room anyway so i say deffo go with the adams Listen to enough music you know through them and youll learn how shit should sound anyway
Re: headphone vs monitor question prease
Yeah so you can mix a track to sound good in your room. No way you'll learn how your room
affects the sound in a bad way, then correct for it. Because that would mean the finished
mix shouldn't work on your speakers.
