My view on religion
Yeah-so-how do people put such unshakable belief in their faith in God when, apart from a pantheism point of view-God is wholly abstract-we have no idea what he looks like-what colour he is-is he big-is he small? Then-does he exist at all? Are we lulled into this belief that there is a God through indocrination just by priests and parent's etc-to the point where our faith is unwavering-well I liken that to believing in Santa Claus as children-you're told one thing and one thing only and you believe nothing else-to put that into this context-aren't we therefore all agnostic? If we don't know for certain??
Re: My view on religion
Marxist social theory'd say that religious belief creates a universe in the participant where there is always somebody more righteously powerful than you, and to just accept your lot farther down the class pecking order. The precursors to the modern state were pretty much entirely built on this foundation of the threat of retribution from On High.
I think there's a lot more to it than people realize, Marxists included. It's a coping mechanism, but what are we coping with - existence itself? That's why it lightens peoples' burdens - existential responsibility is no longer entirely in their own hands... God's will. Sometimes I get a little jealous of those with real faith, but I couldn't become one. My mom has faith and it keeps her afloat but also limits what she gets to experience, so... I dunno.
Besides, god is IMO little more than the combined principle of emergent nonlocalized intelligence (panpsychism) and basic part of the universe. God is a process, a natural meta-law. The driver behind the evolution of evolution itself; the sculptor of entropy.
God is in the details. God is not conscious of the details.
God doesn't know more about you, who are a part of "him*", than you do about him. Different orders of magnitude.
God is not a personality or manifest being. He is a purpose driven facilitator of is-ness. He is the refinement that produces natures most sophisticated creatures, ecosystems borne from bloody claws and fangs.
* pinning gender on them seems like a purely human thing to do, naive.

Re: My view on religion
I think religion is a failed attempt at law….
...and also an art form
I actually like religious thought - but not as dogma…or institution
as an expression of - the way we relate to things
or the way we should relate to things…
Obviously I'm going to be leaning towards more naturalistic religions
-the far east and such…but I get stuff from all religions.
I have a severe dislike for evangelical christians - and all dogmatic/extreme expressions
because those people are just flat out crazy. mentally disabled.
and there are things to learn - even from the negatives so…
- before I treat you guys anymore like kinder people
The movie Wizards was really beautiful and impressive to me
in a religious way - when I was 6 years old…

I told you my older cousins really did a # on me - children of the 70's - hardcore.

Re: My view on religion
On a forum with relatively few active members where a majority of those members (to my knowledge) are atheists, what exactly is the purpose of making a view expressing your view on religion? Not hating or anything, just curious

Re: My view on religion
tbh you could probably argue that in both communism and capitalism, atheism is used to keep people working/productive, giving us material goals._ronzlo_ wrote:Marxist social theory'd say that religious belief creates a universe in the participant where there is always somebody more righteously powerful than you, and to just accept your lot farther down the class pecking order.
also socialist/communist state-imposed atheism is more a means of getting a political opponent out of the way, rather than some grand liberatory act. and, as a side note, the church was used as a means of espionage in the communist era.
Re: My view on religion
I always find it funny when people diss religion and only take christianity as example, while the vast majority of those people wholeheartedly believe in the theory of evolution simply because of what they were taught in school and are being told by the general public/media. Instead of actually doing research into it, and having any actual proof.
Because let me tell you something, when you actually do the research you will come to realise that the theory of evolution is actually based totally on assumptions instead of facts or solid proof.
We see the survival and mutation of currently existing gene-pools as evolution, but that's actually not what evolution is. Not at all, in fact. Just look at the definition of the word 'evolution'.
I will even go one step further by saying that any sign of evolution has actually never been recorded so far. Never.
The theory of evolution is also a form of religion. It's simply a theory that is being brought to the masses through textbooks and all forms of media, and 99% of us therefore believe it as fact. While it is not.
Let me end this post by saying that no, I am not a christian, in case you had already made assumptions. I am also not trying to convince anyone that I am right, I'm just hoping to make clear that you should do your own research, and from that make your own conclusions, instead of blindly believing what you have and are being told by others.
I used to call myself an atheist for the vast majority of my life before I realised that I was being lied to.

fucking lol
I'm sure the "research" you did yourself on the internet is more valid and conclusive than decades/centuries of peer reviewed science from people who make that kind of stuff their life work

Re: My view on religion
Vishes, what about if you don't believe in religion and evolution?
Re: My view on religion
Oh I have started to believe in the existence of a god - something which I wouldn't have tought possible up until 2 years ago - I just don't believe in the doctrines of the church or other currently existing forms of religion. Simply because they are not based upon the truth.
Now I know that most people don't want to hear this stuff, because it would ultimately result in the destruction of entire belief systems that you've probably had for most, if not all, of your life. And I completely understand that. Two years ago I would've reacted the exact same way.
I just hope that more people will start to open their eyes and actually look into what they're being told and thaught without instantly accepting it as fact or the truth.
And again, let me stress that when I say that you shouldn't accept or believe things at face value, that also means that you shouldn't instantly believe what I am saying. Of course not. I'm just a dude with an account on an internet forum.
All I'm saying is that people should do their own research, and from that draw their own conclusions.
Let me share a little example about the basis of the theory of evolution that should hopefully raise some questions.
And please, try to ignore your initial gut reaction when reading this. This information has been so imbedded into our current beliefs that it is very hard to think otherwise or even question it. I know. But please just try to set those beliefs aside for a second and really think about it.
Now then, let's take a look at the geological time scale. I assume we've all seen it in some form or another.

Now, what is this based on? The discovery of fossils and the dating of these fossils.
But how do we date these fossils? How do we determine the age of a fossil?
We do this by looking at the layer of earth that it was contained in upon recovery.
Sounds fair, right?
But how do we date the layers of earth? If we date a fossil by looking at the layer of earth it was in, we obviously need to know, or be able to determine, the age of this layer.
Well, this is done by looking at the fossils that the specific layer contains. Every layer has been given it's own index fossils by which the age of the layer of earth can be determined.
Now how many people do you think actually think about that upon hearing or reading this information? This stuff is in textbooks and is being taught to kids all over the world from a very young age. Most people therefore see it as fact and would never even think about questioning it.
But let's just stop and think about it for a second. We determine the age of a fossil by looking at the layer of earth it was in, but the age of this layer of earth is determined by looking at the fossils it contains...
That's called circular reasoning.
Now some could say that there is another method of dating fossils and organisms widely being used today called carbon dating, or C14 dating. Which is indeed the case.
But why this is still being used today is an absolute mystery to me as it's already been proven to be heavily inaccurate.
For instance, an Arkansas anti-evolution bill that missed being passed stated that when the frozen remains of a vollosovitch mammoth were found, the lower leg of the animal was carbon dated as being roughly 15,000 years old, whereas it's skin and flesh were dated as being 44,000 years old.
While in another instance a freshly killed seal was carbon dated as being 13,000 years old.
And there have been many, many more of these cases.
Honestly, I could go much, much deeper into this, but I feel that that I would miss my point in doing it that way.
And I know that I cannot debunk the theory of evolution by just this example alone, I simply chose to use the geoligical time scale as an example because it doesn't require a tonne of knowledge or information to be properly understood and explained.
I also know that it would be simply impossible for me to convey to you the hours upon hours that I have spent reading about this and similar subjects over the past few years to find out for myself what is actually true and what isn't. And I therefore realise that I can't expect others to see me as a reliable source of information. And I don't expect that.
I just really wish that we would open our eyes and use our brains more often.

Re: My view on religion
I don't see what is so difficult or unrational about mutation.
A big thing in international politics…
China has been claiming Tibet…
Tibet claims that they are a totally different people…
and they had scientists do a genetic run down on them and they found…
That tibetans as a people - genetically - are different
They have a marker for increased oxygen capabilities…
probably a result of natural selection over centuries for life at higher elevations…
Chinese people do not have this….All Tibetans do
So - What is that? Evolution.
Mutations selectively accelerated by natural selection...
over wide expanses of time.
Things change - Why is this hard to accept?
Throw a bunch of benzene on an organic cell and it will go cancerous.
Take a bunch of vitamin d out of a girl and her muscles will go stiff.

It's not a logical failsafe to discount a principle of measure, if it happens to misrepresent the intended scale or if it's the odd one out in a miscalculation.
It doesn't work like that, but religion does.
You've basically taken your opinion and had it depend on that single miscalculation and that is religious logic if anything. I need this answered or else it's all 'magic'.
Also and Im sorry this is going to sound shit, but I've been to Galapagos and seen exactly what evolution is.
You have Iguanas all over G.They look different on several of the little islands that G consists of. One is ofcourse the dad OG Iguana - he looks like he does.
Then there's the Iguanas that have lived for some centuries (maybe more ofcourse) on another of the little islands that have been cut off from the mainland and OG dad Iguana by Lava. They've developed slightly different features during this independant evolution. It's just immediately noticable when looking at them in groups. Some have slightly harsher claws or nails, because the soil is different because of the lave etc etc

I'm saying mutation and evolution happens…
Let's stop worrying about if they wanted to gay rape angels.
If we must speak on the intentions of GOD in - let say - his creation of gays…
Then we have to trust that he gave them their particular personal journey
- for what ever reason -
and as "christians", It's our duty to respect that god given journey…
-no judging!!
and continue on our NEW YORK JEW mission to make a heaven here on earth.
