Downsize monitors from 6/6.5 to 5

Post by DimensionX » Sun Feb 15, 2015 6:59 am

I have a pair of Focal CMS 65's and I want to know if anyone has gone from 6/6.5's to 5's and what their experience has been. I understand your obviously losing frequency range but aside from that what has your experience been like? Im looking for answers like "it wasn't that much of a loss, I adjusted my ears to them and eventually it worked out" or "it was detrimental to my mixing, those extra lower frequencies really meant a lot to me" etc etc

Im asking because it's increasingly difficult to find a place where I can play those lower frequencies without bothering my roommate(s) but if it's REALLY important I will suffer through possibly waiting in a place I don't want to be JUST so I can find a place that WILL allow me to play those extra lower frequencies.

Personally I find myself eqing out lower frequencies (ONLY because my roommates don't like them) and I actually enjoy the sound though when listening to other peoples music there are some songs that I miss those lower frequencies but I was also thinking I could just mix those lower frequencies on headphones (I have both K712's and DT770's).

Note - I do have panels/bass traps

I'd keep em and just stick to using headphones when your roommates are being bothered. DT770's are great (I use DT880's) and keep the Focals for when they aren't around to crosscheck your mixes. I have Yamaha HS80's and I only use them when my roommates aren't around.

I dont think it would really be worth your trouble to buy/sell and potentially spend more money just to lower sub freqs a lil bit. Just put a highpass on your master if you are producing at night. If you are listening to other stuff run it through ableton with an EQ or an actual hardware EQ if you have one.

Turn off Hipass during the day.

Problem solved ;)

Honestly yeah don't get smaller ones just so they have less bass, you can do that artificially like moto is suggesting as opposed to getting ones that are smaller and physically have less bass response. If you move or something you might find yourself wanting the larger ones back later on anyways.
