OS/DAW Question

Hi, so instead of having two seperate operating systems, one for daw duties and the other for general use, can you just have the one OS, but with 2 usernames each with the programs/settings needed. Thus saving 30GB on an SSD.

I think the only relevant setting that you cannot change per user is processor scheduling.

Before I do this, can anyone see a problem with this?

Just being curious, what kind of settings & programs are you talking about? I don't see any problem with this, but I'm not really sure if it's worth it unless your computer is really slow.

Well it's not a question of speed just disk space. 30gb on an 120gb ssd is a fair whack!

As for the settings, I come from the old xp way of doing things where there were a million tweaks you needed to make to get the pure daw system with no extraneous things that were not related to music production. Even a bare bones edited os install, but that's probably not necessary with win 7.

Come to think of it I think the only settings that are different on my current daw install is gfx settings on super basic and processor scheduling set to "background programs".

Ok, I guess it's a no-brainer. I've done a quick google and all STeinberg recommend is turning of power saving and processor scheduling set to "background programs".

I did too, but tbh no amount of tweaking ever helped as much as getting used to bouncing stuff to audio, turning off all analyzers/other moving visual stuff from plugins when not using them and adding slightly more latency from preferences.

I still haven't figured out why you would wanna have 2 different operating systems on the same computer? Can't you do all regular stuff on the same OS you run your daw?

He may or may not be referring to the fact that the recommended best practice for "pros" is to have your DAW be dedicated, as in isolated or totally unconnected to teh interwebz, and another machine that's just for that stuff and email, gaming, porn, etc.

Why? Because it'd suck if your pro level creative workspace and all your tune files got fucked up by a stupid Trojan you picked up on a wanksite. And you're also supposed to scan the shit out of ANYTHING you download and want to transfer via USB or whatever. Like freedrumkits.net - google takes you right there without warning if you search for free kits - site is infected like fuck.

In reality tho, I suspect most people here don't have dual machines (or even dual boots on the same machine for that matter.)

Damn man, I haven't even backed up anything in ages . Anyways, good points in general, but would having 2 different operating systems on the same machine really help on this matter? Maybe if you had some weird combination like OSX + Linux, but if you have 2 different windows OS's on the same computer, couldn't that same trojan easily just fuck up it all?
