They are not athletes though. Just football players and that is part of a more serious way of answering that tbh.

At the same time the way Mourinho manages to be a tnuc in a way that helps his projects is still heralded as the best thing in sports media and even culturally. It could be said that it works. Which is gross. But at least brits know how to hate on united and that kind of (at times very arrogant type of) supremacy.

I disagree. They are athletes they are professionals, and whether they like it or not, they are role models. They are blessed to have the ability to play a game for a living and they should treat those in and around the game with the utmost respect and courtesy

Ofcourse. But there are specific american connations to using that word in the context of sport that just aren't represented in football.

There's a certain humility to having to go through the whole college scholarship bit and the drafting bit.

That's some of the things Europeens could learn from american sport.

Footballers get away with all sorts of shit. But that doesn't mean you're not in the right.
Maybe a way of saying it, is that their behaviour doesn't get corrected properly.
