130 thread
Re: 130 thread
I think - and this is a question for all the thread - is that the central dynamic for the 130 space is the tension between groove and drop, or groove v disruption of the groove. Sounds like some of you have had some thoughts on a set with a lot of groove.
my concerns recently is that the two poles have been diverging: some people playing such long groove sets that there's no drop. other people playing so dark and banger-y that there's no groove or tension built. i really want, personally, to find a place that holds those two together, at differing places in the set.
For example, you can see in that outlook set that the first part is an attempt to build a sense of percussive, groove and tension:
Parris "Pressure"
wot do you mean (original) - dusk & blackdown
Drenched (Facta remix) - dusk & blackdown
Sly One "Cow Bell"
circula - deep data
Timeless - blackdown
Aphix "Sin King"
Back 2 go FWD>> - dusk & blackdown
Back 2 go FWD>> (Sweet 2 go sour mix) - dusk & blackdown
Caski "Tunnel Music"
Whereas later there's an attempt to deliberately disrupt the groove, either with drops or just offkey percussion:
Pinch & Mumdance Turbo Mitzi VIP
Damu - WhirlyBird
wot do you mean blackdown version
damu - ipolice
Bloom "Keyframe (Gage fukup)"
My other concern recently is that things could get too unbalanced towards dark, kinda like what Bad Company/Tech Step did to jungle, if you guys remember that far back. Or what brostep did to dubstep (but not as bad). It's not a huge concern but i have been trying to introduce tunes like OKZharp & Samrai "gated" or Amen Ra "Surrender", "Triumph" or funky 4x4 Qualifide to keep things skippy but also add some warmth/light, without going bait/mersh (haha never dat haha!).
now it's quite normal in scenes that someone would take one sub theme and focus in on it (LTJ Bukem in jungle, Youngsta in dubstep), but I still think our aim is to host a space where interesting but complimentary themes can come together and make sense (rather than some incoherent "eclectic" mix) in and around 130. That's been the plan for like, 3 years now. We just run that experiment out daily, in each set, and see where we get...

Bad company did turn into dBridge aswell though.
There's no way to pre-empt what turns up or what turns into what. Sometimes autotune means you go harder. Just saying.
Good discussion.

Like bro step
Pretty much like pendulum or chase and status and very mainstream in a uk context, but at the same time very progressive in the states in the way it turned people into electronic music that wasn't house.

LHF

"we spend hours planning shows where we try and join the dots between different clusters of vibes/sounds, whereas sometimes it's nice to mostly take one place/space and explore it."
I couldn't find words myself to express this but imho the show are tunes with a sameish vibe joined together, sometimes the show is my cup of tea, sometimes it isn't but I almost always enjoyed it.
I must say I enjoy both equally sides,, I really like the more agro stuff (gage, damu etc as you mentionned) but the real gems are LHF stuff imho

Re: 130 thread
yeah LHF are crazy lowkey for how sick they are.
I still really want Double Helix - Power (that's the tune with the "LSD is powerful" sample) to be released, and fuckloads of others ofc
The album is still so fucking good

Re: 130 thread
the album and the united vibez radio show
the radio shows got loads of percys but the approach is pretty slow, loads of really ambient stuff
the albums on spotify tho, "keepers of the light" its got almost all the tunes they released beforehand and more

Re: 130 thread
I thought that dark0 set was fully fucked with k9 shouting about waring with him every 20 seconds over every tune. yeh cool you have bars but try not to trample all over every tune ffs. Very few MCs out there that can get the balance right mind you.
Re: 130 thread
yeah fair fair
still i think when it's grime not dubstep you don't want someone like toast butting in every now and then, you want someone screaming away starting hype, but that's just me
