Phrasing?

Post by jaydot » Mon May 04, 2015 12:56 am

Just a question, how do you "phrase" (I think that's the right term) your tracks? ie intro of 16/32 bars-then 1st drop, breakdown, etc

I've started to keep to the same one every track which is a 32 bar intro, a 32 bar 1st drop, a 16 (but usually 32) bar breakdown, a 32 bar 2nd drop and a 32 bar outro...keeps things flowing and if you have things consolidated and they're 32 bars worth of audio or whatever it's easier to copy/paste it.

I let the feel of the track dictate the arrangement.

That's just song structure isn't it? I think phrasing is more the composition/flow/placement of individual elements or melodies.

Dance music is a weird one because it's so tailored to DJs but having the same structure in every tune gets a bit old. Having transitions fall a couple of bars either side of where is expected can make things a lot more interesting but I guess it's annoying to mix. It seems you can jump in to any brostep track at the same point to see if the drop is any good.

Usually 16 bars of guitar solo then I drop the tune.

Shudder to say it, but the rapist is right, phrasing is, well a musical phrase. Like a musical sentence. It is one self contained, self... referential... internally coherent musical thought, there we go. Sections are made of musical phrases, songs are made of sections.

Brown dot, you're thinking of song structure here. Yeah you can do your exoskeleton and develop within that, or you can do waboo's endoskeleton, and let the structure support the song. Both ways have good points, and you can sort of blend the process.

But if you're phrasing in the proper way, like making musical phrases that are understandable/conventional, you're going to end up with a pretty consistent song structure. Music, like everything else is a fractal, so your song structure is often related to your phrase structure.
