Good description. I do find the po-faced earnestness of a lot of releases really fucking tedious. Feels like the sort of life-sapping dirge you can generally avoid by not going to church (gospel excused)
Hmm....

What people like is subjective, obviously. What is missing from this forum is an honest critique of the music.....as in "here is what I do not like, and why".

Part of being able to succesfully critique the music is knowing where the artist is coming from. Whether or not you can relate to the expression does not define its value as a peice of music. However, with everybody and their brother now able to produce music on computers there are plenty of examples of copycat ideas, cliched phrases, and undeveloped ideas.

At its worst (and only speaking for myself) , Dubstep is this repetitively languid, doleful expression of solipsism that drenches ashen brown basslines in minor keys, tars it with a mournful wobbly drone as it cheerlessly drags its toes like a self loathing, pent-up pachyderm pelted with peanuts by screaming children at some third world zoo!

:P

At is best, and only speaking for myself it chugs along with verve creating anticipation, suspension of disbelief, tension and fulfillment. And it does so with through the dynamics of texture, melody, layered rhythms and sound treatments, space vs accent...oh, and a sense of real composition!

Artists that are amongst the best examples of good (to me):
Jellybass http://jellybass.co.uk/
PhoneCall http://virb.com/phonecall
Marlow http://www.myspace.com/marlowdubstep

maybe i can do this reverse so peeps dont get offended... I head out to my local store every thursday for records... in the past 2.5 months (thats since mid august) Ive bought the following new records (i dont buy mp3 or cd only releases):

coki-spongebob (which i dont really like but i buy DMZ for the collection),
DZ- strong on ya ,
Loefah/Darqwan on texture,
its yourz on Ringo, (One sided  , the last one sided record i buy, ever
Peverelist on punchdrunk 005,
skeng on hyperdub,
rainy dayz on deep medi.

So thats 7 vinyl releases.. if its not in the list then im not feelin it really. That means that about 90% of new dubstep releases are not being bought by me. It wasnt that long ago ( even around march 06') that every release was essential :(

that being said...looks like lots of good stuff in the pipeline for november (box of dub 2, burial album, pinch album, )

My Mixes:

Dubstep mixes:
robbiej the loefah mix
robbiej dubstep volume 2
robbiej dubstep volume 3
robbiej dubstep volume 4
robbiej dubstep volume 5
robbiej dubstep volume 6
robbiej dubstep volume 8
Jungle/Drum n Bass mixes:
robbiej dutchie pt 1 (new ragga)
robbiej dutchie pt 2 (new ragga)
robbiej squishy (old skool, intelligent)
robbiej old skool jungle vol 2 (classics)
robbiej culture shock (sambass/brazillian)
robbiej slappy (drumnbass, dancehall, hiphop)
robbiej V2 (V Recordings tribute)
robbiej old skool jungle vol 1A(classics)
robbiej old skool jungle vol 1B (classics)

You need people like Shackleton so when he walks down the street, you can say "that's the bad guy"

He was a really nice guy when I met him. His tunes have a purpose, but I don't think it's making dancefloors explode... it's some good warming up the place music. But I prefer hardcore to warm up the place

you don't need to single out 'bad guys', its just lazy journalists who lump music together for convenience sakes and you get mags like the wire stroking their chins going 'ohh look at this' when they don't know what the fuck their on about. shackleton to me aint dubstep at all, good atmospherics an that but not floor tunes

I think my point was a bit obscure and i was quoting Scarface.
What i was trying to say is that Shackleton and his music is just as important to the scene as anyone else because he defines the peripheral.
And can i also add that i too have met him and he is a top bloke. The Skull Disco link up in Sheffield was one of the best events we've done.

this is cute because shackleton has some huge sub bass drops (eg blood on my hands) , so clearly you have a nice 2" treble tweeter connected to an ipod for a hifi.

whats with the negativity! personally i think writing that you dont like a tune is pointless, its not about rockin the boat... its just who gives a fuck what you think. The artist will get the message when it aint sold. I doubt folks like skull disco are biting your hand off to get in the dubstep club...( 'hamas rule' -BIG) Especially if the reason you dont like it is you dont think it will rock a club. generally its its different strokes for different folks.
