psy-dubstep

Post by truekimbo2 » Mon Oct 29, 2007 2:47 pm

i think it was unclefesta posted his album up, i was very excited because it had a psychedelic vibe to it. as i explained in that post i've always been looking for the merging of the jungle and psytrance cultures, followed by dubstep w/ psytrace once i got into it.

i was rediculously blown away when i found this last week
nagual sound project - invisible movements.

festa, this shit is over the top rediculous.

anyone else who prays for a break/bass heavy psychedelic sound, seems there is hope for the future.

edit: the sub bass isn't quite there on this album, but hey its basically a one of a kind album from what i've seen.

3. Reso & Roguestar No Such Thing as Fate (forthcoming on Urban Graffiti)
4. Hatcha & Benga Progression (Planet Mu)

7. Elemental Bleep (Pitch Black)
8. Ramadanman Silent Winners (unreleased)

So yeah, you're probably thinking- no Skream, no DMZ, 8 tracks in 40mins, no way you're going to waste bandwidth right? If so, you're probably right- this mix is probably not for you. It is how I've been turning Hippies at Outdoor (ie. Outback) Doofs here onto Dubstep, by tapping into a sound close to the Psychedelic Dub they're familiar with by producers like Shpongle, Shulman & Tripswitch, and mixing in some other trippy bits as well with effects. Thanks to all the artists featured for their contributions, hope I've done your outstanding works the justice they deserve & that you'll find new audiences for them as a result? Smile

i heard the nagual album u mention, i found most of it to be really good, especially the heavily dubstep influenced tracks.. On the other hand the more digi dub influenced tracks i found not so out of the ordinary, but luckily the album has more of the first type of tracks... is the first track a remix from something we all know ?? (not stated in the notes so no need for me to mention)...
I wouldnt call it psy trance influenced though, maybe psychedelic yes but i didnt find any resemblances with trance music (i dont think i see the resemblance of trance with most of the tracks from that mix as well)...

NSE are quality, was camping next to the psy-trance tent at glade (big mistake) but heard these during the day, had to check it out. Top quality stuff, really clean drums and sounded big.

for many, psychedelic drugs cause the part of the brain relating to taste to atrophy completely. you've only got to go to your local 'head shop'/smoking emporium to see that.

some of the tackiest most retarded shit i've ever had the displeasure to see/hear/witness has been under the auspices of 'psychedelic', which is a shame.

My house mate is bang into Psytrance
He's played me a few tunes and they are very very dubby
Psytrance gets bad press if you ask me. Proper Psytrance has a really deep atmosphere to it not too dissimilar to most dubstep - you just gotta look past the pikey UV florescent image it has

for something with the psy- prefix it all seems incredibly plodding and pedestrian

-psytrance, that is, not heard any of this other stuff you're talking about

I was quite into Psytrance untill I actually went to a Psytrance rave, some (only a bit) of the music's pretty dope but stupid freeform dancing, the greasy trustafarians spending there perents money on drugs, all this talk of loved up spiritualism and abuse of Indian religion made me want to hit 90% of the ravers with a shovel.

I still listen to stuff like Hallucinogen, Spirallianz (dope shit!!) and some Infected mushroom though.

psy dubstep huh?

Theres alot of cheesy shit being put out under the psy banner that makes me want to floss my teeth with a knife, especially shit from Israel and Mexico. Infected Mushroom for instance...

the darker side of progressive psy is dope though. Its got that apocalyptic atmosphere, with space in all the right places. I think it could be one of the best genres in edm if it weren't for all the hippie stereotyping, stolen religous imagery and wacky neon mushroom fluff. its just the image that kills it.

Could I direct your attention to http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=25109 (previous thread on Psy Dub in the forum)

Personally I don't like a lot of Psy-Trance, but then I don't like a lot of releases in Dubstep or D&B or any of the other kind of music that I do enjoy & follow. The Psychedelic Dub movement championed by the likes of Shpongle, Shulman, OTT & a few other producers has developed in parallel with Dubstep (ie. 1999->) & features the kind of production standards & innovation from its inception that many in Dubstep are only starting get to grips with now. Really the only ties it holds with Psy-Trance is that some of the producers have Psy-Trance backgrounds, but then Simon Posford (Hallucinogen & 1/2 of Shpongle with Raja Ram from TIP) was engineering KLF & Orb records earlier in his career too  The sounds are tripped-out & textured, but really it's more about musicality with low frequencies & inventiveness like mad rhythm + time signatures than anything.

I'd suggest you listen to any release from any of the artists mentioned before passing judgement.

hahahaha, infected mushroom.

if we're going to make comparisons, part of the reason why i was so excited by this particular album is it makes sphongle seem like infected mushroom if catch my drift. (infected mushroom is widely known to be fake, sell out psytrance.)

edit: i'll myspace message the guy and ask him if i can rapidshare the album.

production standards ... that many in Dubstep are only starting get to grips with now.
or over-production, depending on your viewpoint. alot of the best electronic music has the most basic of "production values"
