When you say "roll off" do you mean cutting the freq?

i used to roll everything above 16K off, but after a MAMMOTH thread on DOA debating the merits of barely audible energy on hi hats/rides that exists above this point i have become more wary...

I conducted a lickle rudimentary experiment with a sine wave and my frequency analyser and discovered that i could hear frequencies as high as 19k...

So i now roll everything off above this point (17-19k) as standard -just for the sake of the extra headroom to be gained- and everything else i leave to taste and the individual merits of the track.

No point compromising the sound of a track in preparation for what a mastering engineer will do for you anyway!

What speakers did you use for the experiment?

haha, they are the monitors i use, and i pretty much guarantee your experimant is flawed....cause they aint really the best monitors unfortunately, i always seem to have trouble with the high end of the frequencies with these monitors...they aint bad, but i wouldn't be doing experiments on them.

yessss.. but i did say rudimentary experiment... just made me think that the 16k cutoff is maybe not always the best option...

Do you EQ the final mixdown WAV in order to roll off the highs? Or do you EQ each track in the mixing phase?

Putting a tape sim on the master helps, like VintageWarmer. Dub styles don't need massive treble anyways, so cut those suckers down! I tend to put a touch of boost at 12k on the master and start a 6dB rolloff at 14-16k, bit of tape saturation does it anyways. Cross reference your mixes on car stereos, boomboxes, with and without the Loud button or whatever engaged....

when i tested my last tune out on my friends car system, the sub sat really well, but it sounded slightly tinny on the high end, i do put a little bit of vintage warmer on the masterwav, i'll try and cut the frequencies like you said.

check the tunes on my myspace for a general feel, and see if you think the high end could do with some work

whatever u like mate... i personally treat each track as i think it needs treating and then put my roll off on the output or drums bus, maybe both...
