PC's for Music Production

Post by psychonaught » Tue Oct 30, 2007 6:27 pm

Im sorry if this has came up a lot before but i did a search and didn't find anything specifically helpful to me.
Ive been using a shitty old dell pc for ages and its really starting to fall apart now. I can't even use my midi keyboard with it as the latency is soo high. I was just wondering what specs i should be looking for when building/buying a new computer. There's a few websites ive been looking at that will build you your computer using parts they know are compliant with each other.
I was thinking the specs should be someting like this.

Intel Core 2 Duo (Is there any point shellin out for quadcore)

2GB RAM

250-320 DB SATA 7200rmp HDD

the company i was going to go with provides some all right motherboard with a GeForce 6100 graphics card.

im not really too sure about computers and i want the best performance for music production, and a machine that will be remotely future proof.

Ive already got an alreet external soundcard.

Looking to spend about £350-400

Ta

get a mac.......
but really it depends on how much money you got to spend and what software you use....
as for soundcards much the same and how many ins and outs you want..

just realised it dont matter bout the soundcard ive got one sorted!

basically is quad core really worth the extra pennies?
is 250GB a good amount?
2GB of ram should be substantial from what ive heard/read.

The idea you have sounds good already mate... 320 gig harddrive for sure, 2 gig of ram... and i have a core duo chip, i can run a whole heap of cpu-heavy synths and effects without it chugging up..

just make sure you stay XP, don't bother with vista :)

consider the size of the case..
a bigger case is better than a smaller one,as u would def need to add a proper internal sound card. and also heat wont be an issue.
dou core, 2gig ram :D
