I think it's just a reflection of the type of people that go on music forums generally- a lot of them have lives that are more dominated by music, they think about it more, they want to discuss it and define it and I suppose ultimately in a sense control it.
But I don't think this forum is perhaps as representative as it once may have been of the 'scene'. Go to most big nights and the dissenting voices on this forum would amount to a quite small group of people standing at the back moaning and sighing in time to the wubwubs.
I suppose there's a lot of anxiety in the strength of that dissent, and it will probably escalate if a status quo becomes more established in the music- after all, nobody wants to become marginalised. For me the question has never ultimately been about whether or not I think a certain kind of tune is shit- as Blackdown said in that thread about macho wobbler tunes, it's about a question of balance. I've never liked everything dubstep had to offer, even in 2005 when the standard was (imo) generally higher- but what I liked was that what I did like was given as much room as what I didn't. I don't think anybody wants or expects to control the direction the music goes in, but people can't be expected not to express their concern or anxiety over what they perceive as the possible marginalisation of deeper more atmospheric and rhytmically interesting music. I agree though that terms like 'clownstep' don't really help anyone, just as the term 'neekstep' (generally found in dnb though not yet in dubstep- although how long will that take if 'clownstep' is already being thrown about?) doesn't help anyone.
There are plenty of producers, DJs and nights catering for those people who don't want to hear wall to wall wobblers and dubstep is in a very healthy state really. But then I suppose even that is showcasing a split.

Dubstep Allstars 5 is probably the best example of this phenomenon in dubstep to date. Where's the Kode9, Mala, Appleblim, Shackleton, Boxcutter, Darqwan, Milanese, Vex'd, Burial, Geiom, Blackdown, Quest, Silkie, Martyn and 2562? It's such an obvious divide when you look at what was included: Skream, Benga, Kromestar, Rusko, Caspa, The Others, Juju, Hatcha, Tes La Rok, Magnetic Man, Coki and, of course, N-Type. That's why a different DJ (Appleblim) is doing the next one, who will undoubtedly deliver a different selection of dubstep flavors. Are you saying every mix CD should include a bit of everyone? ok maybe not EVERY type of dubstep (like every producer in the scene hahahahah.) Anyways I like all the different styles of dubstep but I keep my sets energetic! that is my style!
