Post by addict » Wed Nov 14, 2007 11:41 pm

ahh the choice is messed up for budget monitors... i've been looking at them for the last 6 months or so and haven't progressed as to which ones i want to buy..

everyone seems to have a different view of which ones are the best value, i think you just gotta have a listen to some at a music store.... sorry i'm not much help bro, theres a few threads around that discuss what most of the low price range monitors are like

get KRK 8's

go to a guitar center or regional equivalent and bargain with some rookie sales rep

they need the money, and you want the speakers

need vs want

you have the upper hand

KRK 8's can be sold at most us retailers for $150.00 each

just dont tell them festa sent ya

my two pennies....

if you want decent monitors for that budget buy used
tannoy reveals (now discontinued and replaced by Reveal 6) are going for £80 a pair used and they're better than the edirol/behringer market

then spend £120 on a sub and you've got a 2.1 system that will give you better results than a £200 pair of new monitors in the budget range

also, i'd avoid ebay buying used monitors and stick to the reputable resellers eg Jarberry, Row Audio, Tune Inn - this way you've got recourse if something goes wrong with the gear

i had the Tannoy/Sub set-up for about four years before i got my Genelec beauties and its more than decent for the money

you'd make a decision about what kind of speakers to buy because of a light on them? Jesus wept.....

here's a thought - go and listen to a bunch of speakers, and buy the best ones. If there's an annoying flashy light, cover it up with a sticker or a potplant or something.

also, be careful about clip lights because on a lot of budget gear the clips are generally shit and misleading
my old m-audio interface would be bold red but the audio was fine, and vice versa

hahahah i knew someone would pull me up on the clipp light being annoying, same as me saying to my m8 'ahh they look shit thou' im just very very picky. im in glasgow and so far i can only find rub a dub records and a guitar shop that sell monitors, they had some in rub a dub for like 140 and i think they were tascam or genelec. anyone no any decent places to look? also on the net ive just been searching on dv247.com, dolphinmusic.co.uk and various other 'dj' sites. thanks for comments and opinions.

also, if you see a pair of genelecs for 140 then either they're broken or you should be pretty much buying on sight!

http://www.wwbw.com/KRK-V4-Series-2-Stu ... 2769.music

i own them

these are the exact same as KRKs VXT line - little to no difference

check out some VXTs at a shop

they drop off at 62hz

you might want a sub. i dont feel like i 'need' one... i'd rather have the ridiculous clarity depth and balance that these offer at the price. the bass is enough IMO

at the price, i cant see any better option. period

then again, i havent tried everything

plus, you're in europe, so i dont know about their shipping there

and i havent ordered from the site, though i would in a second due to their certifications

SCOUR THE FUCKING FUCK OUT OF THE NET FOR REVIEWS if you didnt know already

and definitely, good luck :D

edit ps the link at top includes the black part

Sound Control on Otago St is shite, don't bother. SC Jamaica St is prolly your best bet in Glasgow, but shop around first. They'll normally match the prices of Turnkey or DV247 or whatever, or you can at least haggle with them. You're a mug if you pay Sound Control's asking price. Rubadub is a great shop for DJs but they don't really know what they're talking about for monitors and other pro-audio stuff. There's a few decent places in Edinburgh if you can travel. Get on Yellow Pages.
